Developmental Psychology ACTIVITY #2

Name: Kathleen V. Briones Course&Section: BS PSY2-B

1. Identify personal hot topics that made an impact in your understanding
A personal hot topic that made an impact in my understanding about human
development is the discussion about the stages of life span- developmental tasks.
Teenage pregnancy is not that easy, there’s a lot of consequences that this may bring
unto you. Here in our barangay there are five (5) teenage moms and two (2) of them are
single parents and I can see how struggle their life is but then they need to face those
consequences, they need to do their responsibility. From that I realized that human
development is also about understanding your own life experience and doing your
responsibility which enables you to move forward in life to find the brighter side of your
future
2. Identify your behavior which are likely to remain stable or which are likely to
change. Why?
For me, my behaviour that remains stable is that being an introvert person, until
now I’m still shy and it is too hard for me to mingle with other people, I can’t really trust
them easily and I’m not comfortable with them. On the other hand, my behavior that is
likely to change is my emotions or my mood. There are times that my mood just
changes for no reason
3. What is your personal opinion about nature and nurture issue.
Personally, I am in favor of nurture because as you can see all the experiences,
environment and even the culture of a certain place where we grow has a great impact
on our lives. It typically molds our behavior perspective, or behaviorism. Just like what
happened to my super close friend who just passed away last month because he
committed suicide. Some of the reasons that pushed him to do that thing was he was so
pressured on the people around him, he was afraid to fail, and not to meet the
expectations of people around him. Knowing that my friend is bright and excellent in
their class, in fact he is the Valedictorian in their batch. He suffered in silence, because
of the influence of his surrounding suicidal thoughts running through his mind. This
event serves as one of my inspirations because my friend and I promised that no matter
what we will be successful professionals in the field of medicine and this really had a
great impact on who I am now. And I, as a Psychology student and dreaming to become
a psychologist in the future, is ready to help those people who are suffering from
depression and anxiety in facing their own silent battles.

4. What does it mean to be a child in the period of 21st century

Children in the 21st century are more likely to be only children, with fewer
opportunities to interact with siblings. Children and adolescents are increasingly pushed
to do more by “helicopter parents”, overprotective parents who hover over their children
to protect them from potential harm. Children are reporting higher levels of stress and
less sleep. Free time to play is decreasing, and there are worries about the reduction of
old-fashioned activities (e.g., running around outside) in favor of time spent in front of a
computer screen. In addition, (and perhaps not unrelatedly), child obesity is increasing
across the OECD, bringing with it a host of potential physical, social and psychological
challenges.

5. 6 principles of the lifespan
1) Development is a lifelong process
→ Development is a process which continues throughout life. It begins at
birth and ends in death of an individual.
2) Development involves both gain and loss
→ The child may develop in one area and lose in another area.
3) Relative influence of biology and culture shift over life time
→ Human development is influenced by biological and environmental
factors. For example, the body strength of the child develops in the early
period but may deteriorate during old age.
4) Development involves changing allocation of resources.
→ It states that during different developmental periods, resources such as;
time, money, social support etc. are used differently. For example, during
old age people require more money to maintain their proper health.
5) Development is modifiable
→ This principle reveals that through proper training development can be
modified. For example, an individual can maintain his proper health by
doing different exercises even in old age.
6) Development influence by the historical and cultural context
→ The child grows, develops, acquires knowledge about the traditions, rules,
regulations of society according to his historical and cultural environment
