Carry, carry, flowers of Rhine,

Love to every love of mine,

Peace to my country and her fertile loam,
Virtue to her women, courage to her men,
Salute those darling ones again,
Who formed the sacred circle of our home.

I picked this stanza as one of the highlights of “To the Flowers of Heidelberg” though it is the
easiest part of the poem to understand and to comprehend the meaning. His poem is simply an
expression of his sadness as he remembered his family whom he loves so much and it is not just
his family that he used to be his inspiration when he wrote this poem but also, He used the
flowers as his symbol of his love for his motherland. He was homesick for his native country, the
Philippines. That’s why in this stanza, he’s conveying a first message to his country which is
peace, virtue to women, courage to men.
