Geomatics
(Definition)

Geomatics is the science and

technology of gathering,
analyzing, interpreting,
distributing and using
geographic information.

Prepared by Dr. Farouk Daghistani

Geomatics
(History)

• Geomatics Term - first used in 1975 by Bernard Dubuisson.

• First Academic program in (1986) – Laval University, Canada.
• Geomatics (new) = Geoinformatics (relatively old)
• Partially new discipline – Partially an umbrella for a number
of disciplines.

Prepared by Dr. Farouk Daghistani

Geomatics
(Disciplines)

1. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): captures, stores,

analyzes, manages, and presents data that is linked to
location
2. Global positioning system (GPS): provides reliable
positioning, navigation, and timing services anywhere on
earth using satellites, monitoring stations on earth and the
GPS receivers owned by users.
3. Geodesy: a branch of earth sciences, is the scientific
discipline that deals with the measurement and
representation of the Earth, including its gravitational field,
in a three-dimensional time-varying space.

4. Remote sensing
5. Surveying
6. Cartography
7. Photogrammetry: the science of taking measurements
from photographs to make physical maps, including
topographic maps
8. Computer Science

Geomatics
(Dimensions)

Space (X Y Z) + Time (T) = XYZT

3Ds + 1D = 4Ds

Examples: Population growth, Gender & Age

distributions, Air Temperature… etc.
