THE COMPANY - BUNDAL - CAYLAN & Crew
ACTIVITY 1: Check What You Know! (5 points: correct & very convincing)(3 points: correct& somehow
convincing)(1 point: incorrect & not convincing)
Suppose you will engage in a micro business. Fill in the company worksheet below based on your proposed
business. (Use extra sheet if necessary)
A. COMPANY NAME & TAGLINE
The name of the company is called “Koffien Kawayan” and when it is read slowly it sounds like ‘ coffee
in kawayan’. The coffee that we use is a native type of brand and the first thing that comes to our minds
when we hear the word ‘native’ is something associated with the place of birth or origin. The Dutch word
“koffie” literally gave birth to the English term ‘coffee’. We held on to its roots and named our company
after the origin word of our main product, which is coffee. We decided to use bamboo cups and other
bamboo generated materials as our main material for our beverage’s container to give it that homey yet
eco-friendly vibe. A little touch of alliteration and we decided to use the Tagalog translation of bamboo
to match it with our Dutch translation ‘koffie’ and now we have “Koffien Kawayan”.
The tagline of the company is “Your eco-friendly coffee” which literally means the coffee that we serve
does not harm the environment. The tagline that we use may be short and simple but it carries a strong
message underneath. The fact that we use sustainable and biodegradable materials would influence
anyone that reads our tagline to do the same. When a customer sees the tagline, it would initially leave
them the impression that our company does not produce any harm to the environment.
Supplier power
Regarding to the supply of the established coffee shop, the suppliers has a moderate risk of manipulating the prices
of the materials. First, the supplier for the native coffee grounds are less likely to raise their price since there are a
lot of shops that sells coffee grounds at different quality but the company will to stick to the native coffee ground
supplier. For the bamboo cups and other eco-friendly disposables, their prices may rise since there are a lot of
businesses that prefers to use environment-friendly materials. But the company will always provide a fair price for
the every good quality products that we receive from the supplier.
Buyer power
Consumer bargaining power is in moderate risk. There are just a few customers on the marketplace because the
company is still in its early phases and is still acquiring consumers. But Koffien loves each and every client,
purchasers may profit from their ability to save money. While Koffien provides good quality products and
services, this may fuel recommendation for the shop. The regulars and future customers may contribute to a bigger
return of investment.
Number of competitors
Coffee shops is not very new to the business industry moreover there is a high threat level of competition since
there are tons of coffee shops in General Santos City. But what makes Koffien Kawayan different is the type of
coffee it serves as well as the container it is served in. Koffien Kawayan offers affordable coffee and products that
can compete. In terms of quality, Koffien is not far off behind.
Possibility of substitution
In terms of the possibility of substitution, there is a medium threat of substitute as there are also a lot of businesses
that provide a similar product, which sometimes has a better product offering. With this, there is a possibility that
the buyers will switch to other shops that can help them satisfy their preferences. But Koffien will try it’s best to
provide the requests of its consumers.
Possibility of new entrants
New competitors may be entering into the business/cafe, offering the same products or services, which may put
Koffien's competitive role at risk. The possibility of new entrants is the ability of new companies to enter into an
industry. It is considered a threat because the new entrants can quickly enter and weaken our position.
Furthermore, if new investors or new firms join the business/cafe, the share of the buyers in the business will be
divided and distributed among the old and new firms, which leads to the obstruction of proper profits of the cafe.
Firstly, the materials needed for the cafe may be too easy to find, which may attract the attention of investors.
Thus, the suppliers cannot change the price to an upper value. Secondly, the case is still new and this also means
that there are about little to no buyers. And, the possibility of new entrants will show that with this relatively new
business, more inventors will be competing for the cafe and same services.
