11
Summary: Session A: Increase
storage capacity
Three Papers
• Fuse plugs been used for raising
• Single concrete arch raised and changed to double curvature
concrete arch. Demolish top part of existing dam
• Concrete gravity Dam 70m high raised 30m by providing CFRD on
downstream side: Problem with side valley movement

12
Summary: Session B: Maintain
Reservoir Active Storage
Five papers
• Sediment bypass Tunnels
• Vertical Multi Hole Suction Pipe
• Install casing Pipe under dam fro dredging discharge
• Retrofitting and change in operation of cascade dams
• Case studies showing each site and each sediment fraction
requires a specific treatment and regular monitoring and
upgrading when necessary

13
Summary: Session C: Upgrading
of monitoring systems and re-
instrumentation
Six Papers
• Thermal monitoring of seepage and erosion. Upgrading thermal
cables and sensors
• 185m high Arch Emosson Dam: Upgrading of thermal monitoring
system.
• New seepage detection techniques
• New method of continuous monitoring of vertical concrete joint
movement in concrete arch dams: fibre optic cables
• Various applications to instrumentation improvements on dams:
risk analysis for identifying needs , Piezometers, concrete
expansion stresses, etc.
• Planning, stakeholder involvement, project specific applications of
new technologies.

14
Summary: Session D:

Three Papers
• Upgrading in Spain addressing various safety issues: Foundation
leakage, floods issues, lowering of spillway crest level.
• R19: Risks of incomplete dam addressed: Marmarik Dam Armenia
settlement of 13,5m just after construction: Various unsafe issues
and upgrades
• R23: Norway: Rehabilitation of the five Dams: Five Dams became
1 lake by construction of two new dams.

15
Summary
Heightening: Consider the full extend of the foundation – not
just the dam. No real recipe for dam heightening specific..

Adapt to changing conditions.

Siltation important question.

The main Problem of the future

Assumptions in design phase of the dam – reconsider these

aspects during life of dam

Adapt the dam to changing conditions

Downstream conditions change a lot.

Re-instrumentation because of the change of regulation. – adapt

to the changing conditions of the dam.

Design will change – expected as design the behaviour. Monitor 16
