An Update on the new Clubhouse

Today, the Selection Committee met to finalize the selection of an Architect for our new
Clubhouse. The Selection Committee was made up of members of the Long Range Planning
Committee—Doug Hardham, Cairy Holtby, Dick Duggan, Mike Culos and Bill Gibson together
with selected members of the Board—Commodore Ross Lang, Vice Commodore Chuck
Robertson, Treasurer Bill Thompson as well as a representative from the City, Randy
Cleveland. While members of the Selection Committee all had unique opinions, at the end
of the day our selection of Jim Meiklejohn from the firm M&M Architecture (Alternative C for
those of you that viewed the renderings) was unanimous.

We want to take this opportunity to briefly explain the process that the Selection Committee
has gone through to reach this decision.

We originally sent a Request for Expressions of Interest to eight architectural firms in BC.
From the seven that responded, we picked the top three firms (all from Kelowna) and invited
them to participate in a Request for Proposal which required them to provide, in addition to
the renderings you have already seen, considerable detail on the functionality of the
proposed building, estimated costs and their suggested floorplans. There were a myriad of
other details the proponents had to deal with—views, prevailing winds, sunlight, energy
efficiency, security and, of course, the provision of both private and public areas with
appropriate separation and integration possibilities.

Because this was considered to be a design competition, it had to be held under the auspices
of the Architectural Institute of BC (AIBC). On balance, the involvement of the AIBC was
positive. Technically, the phase we have just completed is referred to as the schematic
stage. Now that we have completed it, we will begin to work with M&M Architecture to
modify the design. The Selection Committee has a lengthy list of issues with the proposal
they submitted and we expect there will be a number of changes made in order to meet our
specific requirements both for the present and the future.

On behalf of the Selection Committee, we thank the membership for your input.
Approximately 13 % of our members voted on the renderings. With 49% of the votes cast,
the membership voted for Alternative A. But, as outlined above, there were many other
factors that were considered and which resulted in our final unanimous selection of
Alternative C.

We congratulate and look forward to working with Jim Meiklejohn and his associates.
Meiklejohn Architects Inc. (M&M Architects) has over fifty years of continuous practice in the
Okanagan and a combined 18 professionals in their Kelowna and Penticton offices, making it
the longest established and one of the largest firms in the Okanagan.

We also want to thank New Town Architecture and CEI Bevanda for their outstanding
submissions.
