Biomes and

Plants
Second Grade
What is a biome?

“Biomes are regions of the world

with similar climate
(weather/temperature), animals,
and plants.”

Desert
Woodland

Rainforest
Tundra
Savanna Ocean
Desert Climate:
Hot temperature
(over 100 degrees) in
the day and cold at
night.

Precipitation:
Deserts are the driest
places on earth - fewer
than 10 inches of rain a
year

Plants need:
To store water in their
stems to last until the
next rain.
Woodland
Climate:
The summers are
hot and dry. The
winters are cold Plants need:
and moist.
Some plants grow
in the shade, but
others grow in the
Precipitation: sunlight.
It rains often
throughout the
year.
Rainforest
Very hot
Climate:
Very humid, (meaning that the air feels wet or sticky).

Rainforests get a lot of rainfall, ranging

Precipitation: from 80 to 400 inches per year.

Plants need:
● To be tall so they can reach sunlight.
● Wide and shallow roots for soil nutrients
● Most trees have smooth thin bark and leaves
that let rain roll off without damage.
Tundra
Climate: Precipitation:
Cold, harsh environment
Long, cold winters Very little rain
Very windy

Plants Need:
Frozen soil makes it hard for plants
to grow
No trees grow here!
Savanna

with no rain
Underwater
Climate Oceans can be warm (86°) or cold (28°)
Lots of rain and clouds

Plants Need:
Do not need much light because light does not
reach the ocean floor
Some plants float and some attach to the
ocean floor
WHERE can each biome be found?

Greenland
Northern parts of
United States
and Canada

Mainly in Brazil, also extends into
Columbia, Peru, and other South
American countries

Let’s Do an Activity!
You and a partner will get cards with the name of a
biome and a type of plant.
The type of biome will include characteristics of that
place.
The type of plant will include a structure and a function.

Your job will be to match the type of plant to the type of

biome it lives in!

Each type will have 1 matching pair.

Palm Tree
Structure Function

Allows for structure of leaf to stay

Shiny waxy leaves
unharmed in poor, rainy weather

Keep animals away while

Spiky/sharp trunks competing to survive
Baobab Tree

Structure Function
Shiny slick outer bark Keeps the tree cool in warm weather

Stinky flowers Attracts fruit flies that pollinate the

trees
Long roots
Reaches deep underground water
sources
Cactus
Structure Function
Protect from animals
Sharp spikes
and birds

Store water in
Saves enough water for
its stems and
very dry areas
roots

Some cactus Food for humans and

have berries animals
Kelp

Structure Function

Blades Give plant strength and

(leaf) durability

Stipes Provides support for

(stem) the kelp blades

Holdfasts Secures plant to

ground
Evergreen

Structure Function
Gives animals
Big tree shelter in cold
weather

Wood Can be used to

make fires

Sap from
Can be used as

Arctic Poppy

Hairy Stem Keeps in heat

Bright, yellow
