Hardware Quiz
Vocabulary Define each of the terms below

1. Motherboard- The main circuit board of a computer, usually containing the central processing unit
and main system memory as well as circuitry that controls the disk drives, keyboard, monitor, and
other peripheral devices.

2. Microprocessor- An integrated circuit that includes a computer's main processing unit on a single
chip, such as the central processor or graphics processor

3. CPU- CPU controls the interpretation and execution of the ALU instructions and executes the
instructions. The CPU is often housed on a single silicon chip known as a microprocessor. Also, CPU
is generally interchangeable with microprocessor and processor.

4. ROM- stands for Read Only Memory, a storage medium used on your computer to store data. The
data stored in ROM can only be read and it is almost impossible to change it. Unlike RAM, ROM is
non-volatile, which means that the contents of the ROM are preserved even when the computer is
turned off.

5. RAM- Random Access Memory (RAM) is a computer's short-term memory that is used to process all
active tasks and applications. None of your programs, files, games, or streams would work without
RAM. Here we explain exactly what RAM is, what RAM stands for, and why it is so important. Then
learn how you can relieve your computer memory with a special power amplifier.

6. BIOS- Short for Basic Input / Output System, BIOS (pronounced byeoss) is a ROM chip found on
motherboards that allows you to access and configure your computer system at the simplest level
possible.

7. Output Device: (Give Example)- input devices are the devices that take the data from the outside
world and send it to the computer processor for further processing. Input devices control the data
signals of an information processing system. Examples keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone,
camera, game pad, drawing tablet, etc.

8. Output Device: (Give Example)- An output device is a piece of computer hardware that receives
data from a computer and then translates that data into another form. That form may be audio,
visual, textual, or hard copy such as a printed document. Examples monitor, printer, headphones,
speaker, projector, etc.

9. Hard Drive- A hard drive is the hardware component that stores all of your digital content. Your
documents, pictures, music, videos, programs, application settings, and your operating system
represent digital content that is stored on a hard drive. Hard drives can be external or internal.

10. Modem- Modem is defined as an abbreviation for modulator-demodulator, a device that makes it
possible for computers to communicate with one another without being directly connected to each
other.

11. Graphics and Sound Cards- A dedicated graphics card (or video adapter) is an expansion card
installed in your system unit to convert binary data received from the CPU or GPU into images
displayed on your monitor. It is different from the integrated graphics chip. Modern graphics cards
include ports that allow you to connect to a wide variety of video devices; they also contain their
own RAM, the so-called video memory.
