PREFACE

I havebeenworkingwoodsincemy earlychildhood. On my motherssidemy grand{ather and


greatgrandfather wereboth carpenters.I knew themboth andhad the opportunityto work
with"Gramp".My fatherwasan industrialartsteacherfumedcarpentersowoodworking was
definitelyin my blood.Duringmy boyhoodI wasalwaysbuildingsomething,from boatsto
gunhandlesandIromgo-cartsto woodenbowls.Not onlywasI fascinated with woodbut my
questfor perfectionnearlydrovemy fathercrazy.

Duringmy earlyyearsof professional furniturebuildingI workedhardto masterthe art of


dovetailing. As a studentandteachlngassistant at BYU,I usedmy access
to thewoodshopto
practicecuttinga row of dovetails eachmomingbeforeclass,OnceI mastered theprocess my
nextquestwasspeed.I hadthe incredibleopportunityto spendsometimewith mastersLike
TageFridandAlan Peters. Theirinput to my careerwasboth pricelessandinspiring.It is
because of thisI now feelit both an honoranda dutyto passon whatI know andhelpkeep

Oftenoverlooked" oneof the keysto a successfuljoint is to haveaccuratelymilled stock.


Yourboardsshouldhavethe insidefacehandplanedflat,smoothandparal1e1 to the outside.
Theedgesshouldbe planedstraighfsquareandpara1le1 to eachother.Theendwherethe
joint will be cutneedsto be squareto the long edgesandthe face.Theendalsoneedsto be
smoothto bettershowthe knifelayoutmarks.

It is a goodideato practicewith the samewoodsyou usefor building.Themostcommon


placefor dovetailsis in drawerconstructionand slncethe drawerfrontsarethickerthan the
sides,throughoutthis bookyou will see13/16"stockdemonstrated for the pin board(simulating
the drawerfront)and 1i2" stockdemonstrated for the tail board(simulating the drawerside).
