MODULE 3.

ASSESSMENT
1. Identify what type of reasoning is applied in the following arguments. Write inductive
or deductive.
a. I have to review only the topics that Mr. Cruz discussed in class. My friend who had
been in his class said he never gave a test on topics that he never discussed in class.

b. Why is Aling Vicky so forgetful? The only reason that I can think of is that she is not
getting enough sleep lately. Lack of sleep makes a person forgetful/

c. Don will make a good president. After all, he did great as a mayor.

d. The heat outdoors must have triggered my blood pressure to go up. Why not? I had
it all normal while I was indoors with the air conditioning on.

2. Four young children are seated next to each other on a bench. The child on the left
cannot be older than the child on the right. The ages of the 1st and 3rd children differ by 8
years. No child is below 2 years old, neither any of them is older than 10 years old. The
2nd child is 7 years younger than the 4th child what are the ages of the four children?
i. Understand the problem
Make the age of the children not below 2 years and older than 10 years old.
ii. Device a plan
Perform a trial and error. Make a table and list the age gap of each children. Then
make the age of the children not below 2 years and older than 10 years old. Since
the 1st and 3rd children have 8 years gap, then let us try 10 – 8 to get the difference
to get the age of the 1st child and when we get the difference lets try to get the age
of the 3rd child by adding the age gap and the age of the 1st child since the 3rd child is
older than the 1st child. For the 2nd and 4th children, let us try 9 – 7 to get the
difference and get the age of the 2nd child and when we get the difference lets try to
get the age of the 4th child by adding the age gap and the age of the 2nd child for us
to get the age of the 4th child.
iii. Carry out the plan

3rd 8 years 8 + 2 (age of the 1st child) = 10 years old
4th 7 years 7 + 2 (age of the 2nd child) = 9 years old

iv. Look back


The answer is reasonable because it shows in the table that the age of the children
are not below 2 years old and neither any of them is older that 10 years old.
3. The reciprocal of 7 is repeating, non-terminating decimal. What is the 12 th digit in the
decimal form of the reciprocal of 7?
i. Understand the problem
Make 7 into fraction and then express the fraction 1/7 as a decimal and look for a
pattern that will enable us to determine the digit 12th places.
ii. Device a plan
look for a pattern. Dividing 7 into 1 by long division or by using calculator produces
the decimal 0.14285714285...
iii. Carry out the plan
look for a pattern, we can tell that the 11th decimal digit must be at 5. Since at 7
follows a 5 in the pattern, the 12th decimal digit must be at 2.
iv. Look back
The answer is reasonable because of the pattern.

4. How many times does the number 5 appears if you write all the numbers from 1 to 200?
i. Understand the problem
Write all the numbers that had a 5 on it.
ii. Device a plan
Make a table and list all the number that had a 5 on it.
iii. Carry out the plan

iv. Look back


The answer is reasonable because it shows in the table that the number 5 appears
from 1-200 have a total of 40.

5. Each letter represents one of the digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9. The leading digits are non-
zero digits. What digit is represented by each letter.
i. Understand the problem
Give each letter a value that had a lowest value and highest value.
ii. Device a plan
Let A =1 lowest value since the leading digit are non-zero digit, and B= 9 highest
value. Then change the letter to given value, do the given step to get the sum and
the value of D.
iii. Carry out the plan
A=1 A 1
B=9 + BB → + 99
D=? ADD 100
iv. Look back
The answer is reasonable because as you can see above is the solution in getting all
the value of each letter.
