 MINI RHOMBUS TABLE RUNNER
Build a unique rhombus cube table runner block by block

without a Y-seam in sight! This complex shape is accomplished

easily with Missouri Star's innovative rhombus template. All you

need to make this marvelous mini table runner is a package of

precut 5" print squares. The results are sure to wow your friends

and family!

1 cut
Select 36 squares from your
package and set the remaining
squares aside for another project.
From each of the (36) 5" squares,
cut (2) 2½" x 5" rectangles.
Subcut 39 rhombuses using the
template.
Using the template again, subcut
2 triangles from each of the
remaining 33 rectangles. A total
of 65 triangles are needed. Keep
the matching triangles together.
2 arrange & sew
This table runner is arranged so 2
matching triangles form the top
of a tumbling block. It’s important
to lay out the whole table runner
before sewing because the pieces
must match the vertical row next
to it.
Begin laying out the table runner
along the bottom horizontal
row. This row is made up of 13
triangles. The first triangle on
the left side of this row points
toward the right. Beginning with
the second triangle in this row,
2 triangles of matching fabric
are set next to each other and
point in opposite directions. This
is repeated for the remaining
triangles in the row. Let’s call this
Row A for clarity. 2A

Lay out the next horizontal row 2A

up from the bottom. This row is Row C

a made up of 13 rhombuses that Row B

Next add a third horizontal row
from the bottom. This row is
made up of 13 triangles and is the 3A 3C

opposite orientation of Row A.

Let’s call this Row C for clarity.

Next add another row of

rhombuses. These are oriented
3B
opposite of Row B. Let’s call this
Row D for clarity.

Add another row just like Row A

next. Then add another Row B
followed by a Row C.

To finish laying out the center of

the table runner, add another row
of 13 triangles that do not have a
triangle of matching fabric next to 3D
it. The triangle on the left side of
this row points toward the right
and the rest alternate directions.

 3 sew
From now on, we are going
to work in vertical rows for
constructing this table runner.
Begin with the triangle on the
left side of the top horizontal row
of the table runner and sew it to
the triangle that is directly below
it. Press the seam toward the
bottom. 3A
Nest the seams and sew the
vertical rows together.
After the rows are sewn together,
trim the top and bottom edges of
the table runner. Be sure to leave a
¼" seam allowance as you trim. 3D

Sew the rhombus that is next in
the vertical row to the bottom
of the second triangle. Press the
seam toward the bottom. 3B
Continue sewing the triangles and
rhombuses to the bottom in the
order that they are laid out until
you have sewn the entire vertical
row. Press all of the seams in
this vertical row toward the
bottom. 3C
4 border
Cut (3) 4" strips across the width
of the fabric. Sew the strips
together end-to-end to make 1
long strip. Trim the borders from
this strip.
Refer to Borders (pg. 6) in the
Construction Basics to measure
and cut the borders. The strips are
approximately 12" for the sides
and approximately 33½" for the
top and bottom.

Sew the rest of the vertical rows

together in the same manner,
pressing all of the seams in the
odd-numbered rows toward the
bottom and all of the seams in
the even-numbered rows toward
the top.

5 quilt & bind
Layer the table runner with
batting and backing and quilt.
After the quilting is complete,
square up the table runner and
trim away all excess batting and
backing. Add binding to complete
the project. See Construction
Basics (pg. 6) for binding
instructions.

 Construction Basics
general quilting
• All seams are ¼" unless
directions specify differently.
• Precuts are not prewashed;
so do not prewash other fabrics in
the project.
• Remove all selvages.
press seams
• Set the temperature of the iron on
the cotton setting.
• Set the seam by pressing it just as
it was sewn, right sides together.
• Place the darker fabric on top, lift,
and press back.
• Press seam allowances toward the
borders unless directed otherwise.
borders
• Always measure the quilt top in 3
different places vertically before
cutting side borders.
• Start measuring about 4" in from
the top and bottom.
• Take the average of those 3
measurements.
• Cut 2 border strips to that size.
Piece strips together if needed.
• Attach one to either side of the
quilt. Position the border fabric
on top as you sew to prevent
waviness and to keep the
quilt straight.
• Repeat this process for the top
and bottom borders, measuring
the width 3 times. Include the
newly attached side borders in
your measurements.
backing
• Measure the quilt top vertically
and horizontally. Add 8" to both

measurements to make sure
you have an extra 4" all the way
around to make allowance for
the fabric that is taken up in the
quilting process as well as
having adequate fabric for the
quilting frame.
• Trim off all selvages and use a
1/2" seam allowance when piecing
the backing. Sew the pieces
together along the longest edge.
Press the seam allowance open to
decrease bulk.
• Use horizontal seams for
smaller quilts (under 60" wide),
vertical seams for larger quilts.
• Don’t hesitate to cut a length of
fabric in half along the fold line if
it means saving fabric and makes
the quilt easier to handle.
• Choose a backing layout that best
suits your quilt. Note: large quilts
might require 3 lengths.

• Use 21/2" strips for binding.
• Sew strips together end-to-end
into one long strip using diagonal
seams, a.k.a. plus sign method
(next). Press seams open.
• Fold in half lengthwise with wrong
sides together and press.
• The entire length should equal the
outside dimension of the quilt plus
15" - 20".

• Lay one strip across the other
as if to make a plus sign right

• Sew from top inside to bottom

intersections of fabric as you sew.
Trim the excess fabric 1/4" away
from the sewn seam.
• Press seam(s) open.

• Match raw edges of the folded
binding to one edge of the top of
the quilt.
• Leave a 10" tail at the beginning.
• Use a 1/4" seam allowance.
• Start sewing in the middle of a
long straight side.

• Stop sewing 1/4" before the corner.
• Move the quilt out from under the
presser foot.
• Flip the binding up at a 90° angle
to the edge just sewn.
• Fold the binding down along the
next side to be sewn, aligning
raw edges.
• The fold will lie along the edge
just completed.
• Begin sewing on the fold.

• Stop sewing when you have 12"
left to reach the start.
• Where the binding tails come
together, trim excess leaving only
21/2" of overlap.
• Pin or clip the quilt together at
the two points where the binding
starts and stops to take the
pressure off of the binding tails.
• Use the plus sign method to sew
the two binding ends together,
except this time, match the
edges. Using a pencil, mark your
sewing line and stitch.
• Trim off excess; press the seam
open.
• Fold in half with wrong sides
together and align all raw edges
to the quilt top.
• Sew this last binding section to
the quilt. Press.
• Turn the folded edge of the
binding around to the back of the
quilt and tack in place with an
invisible stitch or machine stitch.
