53. Athletes have taken great strides all throughout this century but few can compare to
those of Jesse Owens. He beat all the odds and even went against what Hitler had in
mind by taking part in the Olympics in 1936. He was a tough man who knew what he
wanted to accomplish and set out to do just that. In the summer of 1936 Jesse Owens
arrived at the summer Olympics in Berlin. Even though there was hatred all around him
in Hitler’s Germany, he fought hard and won a total of four gold medals, while Germany
could only watch and grumble. One could almost see Hitler’s face as he watched a black
man - who he had depicted as anything but human in German propaganda - beat his pure
blooded Germans. Jesse Owens was a man of great strength, courage and character. He
was someone that the youth of today can look up to as a hero and a role model and in
this day in age that is quite a feat in itself.

54. Different people have different view points regarding physical fitness. Some think that
physi- cal fitness is related to work, whereas some are of the view that physical fitness
reflects the physique of the individual. But doctors may think that a person without any
disease and systems of the body working well is a fit person. In reality, physical fitness is
the capacity of an individual to do his daily routine work effectively and efficiently
without any problem and undue fatigue. The level of physical fitness varies from person
to person, nature of work, size of the person, shape of the body, age, sex etc. A fit person
has sufficient reserve strength, energy and endurance to meet the emergencies. Fitness
of the body influences the mental and emotional conditions of the individual. Fitness of
an individual depends on personal habits, exercise, eating habits, attitude, tensions etc.
The level of physical fitness :
(a) Is the same for all the persons
(b) Varies from person to person
(c) Is independent of gender
(d) None of these
55. Testing is an important element in the field of games and sports. It is an attempt to
assess the needs and capacities of the athlete or player, with a view to help and improve
the performance. With the help of test, teaching can be determined and progress can be
known. But for accurate results from a test, a teacher, coach or trainer must know the
present abilities of the athlete or player. A test should be valid, meaning it measures what
it is supposed to measure and it should be reliable, meaning it is repeatable.
Testing is...................element in the field of games and sports :
(a) An important
(b) Not an important
(c) Useless
(d) None of the above

(c) Gliding joint (d) None of the above
58. According to Corbin & Lindsey, cardio-respiratory endurance is the ability of the body’s
circulatory and respiratory systems to supply fuel during sustained physical activity. It re-
quires a strong heart, healthy lungs, and clear blood vessels to supply the body with
oxygen. To improve your cardio-respiratory endurance, try activities that keep your heart
rate el- evated at a safe level for a sustained length of time such as walking, swimming, or
bicycling. The activity you choose does not have to be strenuous to improve your cardio-
respiratory endurance. Start slowly with an activity you enjoy and gradually work up to a
more intense pace.
Cardio-respiratory endurance is the ability of the body’s..............to supply fuel during
sustained physical activity.
(a) Circulatory system
(b) Respiratory system
(c) Circulatory and respiratory systems
(d) None of these
59. The word anatomy is derived from the Greek word ‘anatomia’, a term built from ana,
mean- ing “up”, and tomia, meaning “a cutting”. The term ‘dissection’ is the Latin
equivalent of the Greek anatomia. Anatomy is the scientific study of living things, their
systems, organs and
tissues. It includes the appearance of the various parts, their structure, the materials
from which they are composed, their locations and their relationships with other parts.
In other words, ‘‘Anatomy is the study of the structure of human body.’’
Human anatomy can be referred to as the study of the human body in respect of all its
parts and their relationships to each other. It can as well
be defined as the scientific study of the structural parts of the human body or living
beings. Anatomy can be broadly divided into Gross anatomy and Microscopic anatomy
both of which can be further subdivided.
The Greek word ‘ana’ means :
(a) Up (b) Down
(c) A cutting (d) None of these
60. There are two types of equilibrium :
1. Static equilibrium means balance when the body is at rest (not moving).
A body is said to be in stable equilibrium if it comes back to its original position when it is
slightly displaced. Static stability is very important in shooting, archery and hand stand in
gym- nastics etc. Stable objects generally have wide bases and low CG. (Centre of
Gravity). Bottom of the ship is made heavy to keep CG as low as possible. This makes the
ship stable.
2. Dynamic equilibrium means balance when the body is moving. Dynamic stability is
balancing the body during movement. It frequently happens that the line of gravity of an
athlete will fall outside the base of support for movement. For example, in a sprint start,
the body weight is ahead of the supporting foot but before the body can fall forward the
other foot moves ahead to provide support and the process repeats itself. A man
carrying heavy bucket in his right hand leans towards his left hand side to maintain
equilibrium. While climbing up a hill, the climber bends forward so that he does not fall.
The equilibrium is maintained by bringing the Centre of Gravity down.
A body is said to be in stable equilibrium if :
(a) It comes to its original position after being slightly displaced
(b) It does not come to its original position after being slightly displaced
(c) Both (a) as well as (b)
(d) None of the above
