Science fiction writers have long dreamed of metal bodies-people using machines to help them when
their bodies fail. Now that dream is slowly becoming a reality.
Scientists discovered that even though a body part is gone, the (26) of nerves which connect
it to the brain still works. With this knowledge, they can (27) machines to pick up signals from the
brain, so people can operate them just by thinking about the action itself. After losing her arm in a car
accident in 2006, Amanda Kitts couldn’t pick up items, drive a car, or do other everyday things. Now she
has the opportunity to (28) the missing arm with a robotic one. The same principles apply to deaf
or blind people. Jo Ann Lewis, a blind woman, can now see the shapes of trees using a tiny camera that
connects to the nerves around her eyes.
However, this technology is still very new. Some people do not respond well to the (29)
and have to stop. Jo Ann Lewis, for example, still cannot see patterns clearly, or even cross a road. But it
won't be too long before scientists (30) in joining man and machine.

Read the following passage and choose the best option to answer each of the questions.
Coal, oil and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of its power. However, not only are
supplies of these fuels limited, but they are also a major source of pollution. Therefore, it’s important to
improve, explore and develop such alternatives energy sources as nuclear, water, solar and wind power.
Each of these alternatives, however, has both advantages and disadvantages.
Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without polluting the atmosphere;
however, they are costly to build and maintain, and they create the difficult problem of what to do with
nuclear waste. Hydroelectric power is environmentally safe and inexpensive and, but impractical for
communities located far from moving water. Wind power is a pollution-free source of renewable energy but
it can’t be used in many parts of the world where there is insufficient wind. Solar power is renewable and it
does not cause pollution. However, it is difficult to collect and store. Solar power also requires expensive
equipment. Every source of energy has its disadvantages. One way to minimize them is to use less energy.
Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy resources will ensure supplies of clean, affordable
energy for humanity’s future.
