FORMATIVE ASSESMENT:

 “Without a free and independent media, true democracy is unattainable” Do you agree with
this statement? Why or why not?
 Yes. Democracy cannot prevail without free and independent media. In democracy, free
expression is considered to be essential. Without that, we are not democratic; we’re simply
doing what that government says we should. Media ensures that we can share, exchange, and
express opinions. This encourages the public to look for information that is relevant to them
without restriction. In addition to serving as guardians of human rights and watchdogs against
abuses of power, free and independent media also provide people with the information they
need in order to uphold their democratic rights. Without access to open and constrained press,
I believe that democracy is incomplete.

2. Explain the message of your political cartoon.

Filipinos normally seek information by its nature as a human being, which is why they depend
heavily on Philippine media. News will circulate at a much slower pace without the media, leaving
the people clueless as to what's going on around them.

Media serves as one of the forces that brings people together in the history of the Philippines; such
as in the time of martial law when people gathered together in EDSA to make a revolt against
Marcos' rule and his dictatorship. In that era, the media was the source of information that brought
the entire country to the downfall of the regime. This reveals the strength of the media which
cannot be undermined.

Today, my main concern with the media is that it appears to be biased, meaning that certain media
networks have a certain inclination or prejudice towards someone or something. The media is
becoming as corrupt as the government agencies in the Philippines. Bribes are openly taken from

politicians by editors and other press authorities. As a return for the bribe, they must cater biased

co
information to the public to help persuade opinions.

To summarize, I think the media is indeed very relevant to a democratic country because they

function as the source of information, but only until we have access to transparent and reliable
information will we be able to achieve true democracy.
