Linear Programming: Exercises

Q1: The manager of Bookstore is considering a sales promotion of a new collection of novels and art
books. He plans to price the books so low as to actually take a loss: he will lose 3 NIS on every novel
and 2 NIS on every art book sold in the promotion. Since the store will only offer the art books to those
who purchase two or more novels, the store will sell at least twice as many novels as art books, and also
plans to sell at least 210 items in all. On the other hand, the store can spare up to 900 units of display
space for the sale. The manager calculates that each novel requires 3 units of display space, while art
book require 2 units. Given these constraints, how many novels and art books should the Bookstore
order to lose the least amount of money in the sales promotion, using graphical solution?

Q2: A company makes two products (X and Y) using two machines (A and B). Each unit of X that is
produced requires 50 minutes processing time on machine A and 30 minutes processing time on machine
B. Each unit of Y that is produced requires 24 minutes processing time on machine A and 33 minutes
processing time on machine B. Available processing time on machine A is 20 hours and on machine B
is 15 hours. At the beginning of the current week there are 30 units of X and 90 units of Y in stock. The
demand for X in the current week is 45 units and for Y is 95 units. How much of each product to make
in the current week to get the maximum in stock at the end of the week, using graphical solution?

Q3: A plant makes aluminum and copper wire. Each kg of aluminum wire requires 4 kwh of electricity
and 1/5 hr. of labor. Each kg of copper wire requires 3 kwh of electricity and 0.45 hr. of labor. Production
of copper wire is restricted by the fact that raw materials are available to produce at most 60 kgs./day.
Electricity is limited to 450 kwh/day and labor to 35 person–hrs./day. If the profit from aluminum wire
is $0.2/kg. and the profit from copper is $0.35/kg., how much of each should be produced to maximize
profit and what is the maximum profit?
a) Write the objective function and the constraints equations.
b) Solve the linear programming problem graphically

Q4: A factory can manufacture two products A and B. Relevant financial and resource requirements
are:
Product
A B
Item
Materials (Kg per unit) 4 1
Labor hours (per unit) 2 3
Unit cost ($) 18 11
Unit Selling price ($) 24 16
Maximum Sales (units) 180 320
The available daily supply of materials (of a unit type) is limited to 800 kg and labor hours per day are
limited to 900. The factory management wishes to set production levels so as to maximize the overall
profit.
1- Formalize the problem in a Linear Programming model
2- Perform graphical solution for the problem showing the feasible region
3- Find the maximum value of the objective function within the feasible region.

Q5: An automobile company produces two types of cars, car A and B. Car A made from 1000 kg metals
and 500 kg plastics, car B made from 800 kg metals and 600 kg plastics. The amount of metals and
plastics available for producing both types are 26,000 kg and 17,000 kg respectively. The company will
gain 1000$/car A and 1250$/car B as profit. Find number of cars produced for the available metals and
plastics and find maximum profit. (By graphical solution)

Q6: A carpenter makes tables and chairs. Each table can be sold for a profit of $30 and each chair for a
profit of $10. The carpenter can afford to spend up to 35 hours per week working and takes 5 hours to
make a table and 2.5 hours to make a chair. Customer demand requires that he makes at least three times
as many chairs as tables. Tables take up four times as much storage space as chairs and there is room
for at most four tables each week. Using graphical solution, how many tables and chairs should the
carpenter produce to maximize the profit?

Q7: A farmer requires 10, 12 and 12 units of chemicals A, B and C respectively for herbal garden. A
liquid product contains 5, 2 and 1 units of A, B and C respectively per Jar. A dry product contains 1, 2
and 4 units of A, B and C per cartoon. If the liquid product sells for 3NIS per Jar and dry product sells
for 2NIC per cartoon. Using graphical solution, how many of each product should be purchased to
minimize the cost and meet the requirements?

Q8: In order to ensure optimal health, a farmer feeds his pets a daily nutrition containing a minimum of
24g of fat, 36g of carbohydrates, and 4g of protein. However, the pets should be fed no more than five
portions of food a day. The farmer orders food X and food Y, and mix them. Food X contains 8g of fat,
12g of carbohydrates, and 2g of protein per portion, and costs $0.20 per portion. Food Y contains 12g
of fat, 12g of carbohydrates, and 1g of protein per portion, at a cost of $0.30 per portion.
What is the minimum cost? Use graphical solution.

Q9: A company produces two kinds of healthy food products (product1 and product2). The selling price is
$15 for one kilogram of product1 and $25 for one kilogram of product2. To make one kilogram of product1
the company has to invest 2 hours of skilled labor, 2 hours of unskilled labor, and 1 unit of raw material.
To make one kilogram of product2 it takes 5 hours of skilled labor, 3 hours of unskilled labor, and 1 unit
of raw material. The company has 100 hours of skilled labor, 70 hours of unskilled labor, and 30 units of
raw material available. The sales contact by this company requires that at least 3 kilograms of product2 have
to be produced. What is the optimal product mix (maximum kilograms of product1 and product2)?

Q10: A company sells computers and printers. The computers are shipped in 12ft3 boxes and printers in 8ft3
boxes considering that the company has a storeroom that can hold 1200 ft3 for both computers and printers.
The company estimates that at least 30 computers can be sold each month.
The number of computers sold will be at least 50% more than the number of printers. Each computer cost
the company $1000 and each printer cost $300 considering that the company allocates $72,000 each month
on computers and printers. Each computer is sold for a profit of $1000 and each printer is sold for a profit
of $350. Using graphical solution, how many computers and printers should be sold each month to maximize
profit? What is the maximum profit?
