Suggested Linear Programming Problems

1) A company produces two types of chairs A and B. Chair A consumes 1 kg of raw material and
B needs 2 kg’s. The market demands chairs of type A more than that of B with total weekly demand
not less than 500 chairs of both types. The company can store up to 400 chairs of type A. The
maximum available raw materials to produce both types are 900 kgs. If the company gains 6 ILS
and 13 ILS as profit of selling chairs A and B respectively, calculate by graphical method the
number of both chairs that produced weekly to get maximum profit. Show detailed solution.

2) Furniture workshop produces beds and wardrobes (‫ )ﺧﺰاﺋﻦ‬which are made from wood, metal and
plastic. Each bed contains 15 kg metal, 10 kg wood and 7.5 kg plastic, while each wardrobe
consists of 10 kg metal, 25 kg wood and 15 kg plastic. The workshop can store weekly 300 kg,
400 kg and 300 kg of metal, wood and plastic respectively. The market demand for wardrobes is
less than twice of beds. The workshop can’t store more than 15 beds weekly.

This business can gain 100 ILS and 200 ILS as a profit from selling beds and wardrobes
respectively. Calculate how many beds and wardrobes the workshop can produce weekly to get
maximum profit. Use linear programming and apply graphical method (Hand-drawing) to solve
this problem.

3) A pipe company manufactures HDPE and PPRC pipes with 63.0 mm diameter. Each meter of
HDPE needs 1 kg of polyethylene and 400 W of electricity. On the other hand, one meter of PPRC
pipe consumes 1.7 kg of polypropylene and 600 W of electricity.

To produce 100 m of HDPE and PPRC pipes, 0.75 and 1.25 working hours are needed,
respectively. For market demand, the company should produce at least PPRC more than half the
amount of HDPE pipes.

Weekly, the company can buy up to 10 ton and 4 ton of polyethylene and polypropylene,
respectively. Furthermore, the available working hours are limited to 80 hrs. The company should
consume weekly at least 2000 kW to gain a discount from the electrical distributor.

If the company gains 12.0 ILS and 8.0 ILS as a profit from selling one meter of HDPE and PPRC
pipes, respectively. Using the graphical approach, calculate how many meters shall be produced
weekly from each type to maximize profit?

4) A textile company produces two types of jackets; A and B. Both jackets are made from polyester
and cotton. A needs 0.4 kg and 0.5 kg of polyester and cotton respectively, while type B consists
of 0.2 and 0.8 kg of polyester and cotton respectively. The total amount of polyester available
weekly are 100 kg and more than 150 kg of cotton.
The weekly available working hours to produce the jackets order are 80 labor hours. The company
intends to produce B type jackets twice more than A one. Jackets order always includes more than
50 jackets of model A.

Use graphical method to find the number of each jacket type produced weekly to achieve a
maximum profit if you know that the company gains 10 NIS and 15 NIS as a profit by selling a
one jacket of A and B type respectively. What is the gained profit?

5) A Plastic company produces two types of bottles; 1L and 1.5L sizes. The 1L bottle consumes
20 g of plastic while the 1.5 L bottle needs 30 g of plastic.
25 W and 40 W of electrical power is needed to produce five bottles of 1L and 1.5 L size
respectively. To meet the market demand, the company should produce bottles of 1L size at least
twice the amount of 1.5L type. Weekly the company should consume at least 20kW of electricity
and not more that 300kg of plastic. The maximum storage capacity of the company is 10000 1L
bottles.
If the company gains 0.8 and 0.5 NIS as profit from selling the 1L and 1.5L bottles respectively,
calculate the amount of both bottles that will be produced weekly to achieve a maximum profit.
