AIMS & OBJECTIVES


Develop an understanding of the general framework of IB philosophy and principles.
Place the English B course within the overall context of the Diploma Programme.
Structure a course that integrates authentic assessment and resources and encourages students to make
links across
the DP.
Focus on the English B guide and the associated internal and external assessment requirements with practice
marking
activities of sample student work.
Share materials and resources.

PRE-WORKSHOP PREPARATION
Suggested time: 60 minutes
Zoom navigation, App usage, Access to Padlet, Quizlet, the Programme Resource, Centre (MyIB), and WhatsApp.
All material sent in advance by Susan should be downloaded. Essential resources: English B guide and Teacher
Support material (First examination 2020). Learner Profile Survey and the Google forms survey sent before the
workshop. Access the InThinking wiki.

DAY 1
9.00 - 10.20 SESSION 1 IB mission and philosophy and the English B course
Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To get to know each other. To understand the general framework of IB philosophy and principles. To
place the English B course within the overall context of the Diploma Programme. To discuss how the IB’s general
approach and the students’ experience of the DP should be applied to the teaching of English B.
Content: International mindedness. IB Learner profile. The English B course and the Diploma Programme. ATLs
and
ATTs. TOK, CAS, EE and the English B course.
Activities:
Workshop Leader introduction. Familiarity with Zoom and digital etiquette. Zoom icebreaker – “get to know you
activities”. Poll. General discussion and questions. Breakout sessions on the DP core.
Material:
Zoom tools. Slides. English B guide from MyIB (PRC).

10.40 - 12.00 SESSION 2 Course design


Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To review stated aims and objectives. To identify the key ingredients of the English B course design. To
explore the integration of TOK. To study the unit-planning process and consider how it should be put into practice.
Content: Review of English B aims. T hemes. Texts. Concepts. Strategies to develop conceptual understanding.
Resources available.
Activities:
Group work (breakout rooms). General discussion.
Material:
Slides. Padlet. Zoom tools. Programme Resource Centre.

12.00 - 12.30 BREAK

12.30 - 13.50 SESSION 3 External assessment: Paper 1 (SL/HL) Part 1


Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To introduce the basic principles and structure of English B assessment system. To integrate elements
of
conceptual understanding into written production. To study the list of specified text types and discuss how these may
be
taught. To suggest some strategies to write effectively in a communicative context.
Content: Requirements. Paper 1 skills and strategies. Concepts and text types.
Activities:
Introduction of an online journal. Visual thinking activity (Breakout rooms). General group discussion. Burning
questions.
Material:
Slides. Zoom tools. Padlet. Quizlet.

INDEPENDENT ASYNCHRONOUS WORK


Suggested time 90 minutes
Objectives & Activities:
Read the Paper 1 rubric (SL/HL) and mark sample papers.
DAY 2
9.00 - 10.20 SESSION 4 External assessment: Paper 1 (SL/HL) Part 2
Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To analyse the written production marking criteria, and discuss how to apply them. To practise how to
use the assessment criteria by marking script samples. Review and share Paper 1 assessment and teaching
strategies.
Content: Assessment criteria. Review of marked samples from Day 1 asynchronous work
Activities:
Zoom Icebreaker 2. Presentation of session content. Group work (breakout rooms). General discussion.
Material:
Video. Slides. Scripts. Zoom tools.

10.40 - 12.00 SESSION 5 External assessment: Paper 2 reading comprehension (SL/HL)


Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To identify the specified text types and consider how they should be grouped and taught. To consider
standard question types. To analyse assessment requirements.
Content: Reading strategies. Texts. Assessment requirements. Literary text (HL).
Activities:
Activation of previous knowledge. Presentation of session content. Group work (Breakout rooms). Visual thinking
activity.
Material:
Slides. Images of different text types. Zoom tools. Padlet. Specimen papers.

12.00 - 12.30 BREAK

12.30 - 13.50 SESSION 6 External assessment: Paper 2 Listening comprehension (SL/HL)


Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To identify suitable sources of listening materials, and to discuss how these can be exploited for different
purposes. To consider standard question types. To analyse assessment requirements and examination preparation.
Content: Listening activities and strategies. Audio texts. Assessment requirements. Specimen paper analysis.
Activities:
The oral text. Group work (breakout rooms). General discussion.
Material:
Video. Specimen papers. Zoom tools. Listening comprehension examination user guide.
INDEPENDENT ASYNCHRONOUS WORK
Suggested time 90 minutes
Objectives & Activities:
Create and submit a practice Paper 2 activity. Choice of reading or listening comprehension using the sample
question types.

DAY 3
9.00 - 10.20 SESSION 7 Part 1 - Internal Assessment: individual oral SL/HL
Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To explore the structure of the individual oral exam and the exam requirements. To provide guidance
about
selecting appropriate visual stimuli and literary extracts.
Content: Preparation and logistics. Visual stimulus (SL). Literary extract (HL)
Activities:
Zoom ice breaker 3. Debate questions. Stimulus hunt and share.
Material:
Zoom tools. Classroom Screen. Slides. Images and literary extracts. IB requirements and support on IA.

10.40 - 12.00 SESSION 8 Part 2 - Internal Assessment: individual oral SL/HL


Objectives & Content:
Objectives: To analyse the oral marking criteria and discuss how to apply them. To practise how to use to criteria by
marking samples.
Content: Final reflections and sharing of resources. Internal Assessment: individual oral SL/HL . Moderation.
Assessment criteria. Suggestions, ideas, resources.
Activities:
Group work (breakout rooms). General discussion. Ideas, suggestions, questions. Poll.
Material:
Zoom tools. Slides. Students’ samples. Padlet. Video/Audio.
