HISTORY AND RULES IN PLAYING VOLLEYBALL

INTRODUCTION
Volleyball is a popular sport which can be played both indoors and outdoors. It appeals to people of
all ages and skill level. It is fast-paced, with constant jumping and running, and thus provides a
strenuous
Aerobics workout. It also requires mental alertness and quick, precise physical reactions.

Many associate volleyball with the beaches of southern California and in fact, a number of
professional players get their start by playing beach volleyball. However, volleyball is popular not
only in the beaches, but in virtually every country of the world. In 1964, it was officially recognized
as part of the Olympic Games.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (CILO)

 Discuss the nature/background of volleyball;
 Interpret the rules and violation of volleyball

HISTORY OF THE GAME

On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical

education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoors
and less strenuous than basketball. He divided a rectangular court into two equal parts by piles of
books lined at the center of the court that serve as the net. Morgan called the game “mintonette”
because of the net which he used to divide the court into two. The objective of the game is to keep the
ball on air by using the hands to hit the ball back and forth from one side of the court to another until
one group misses the chance of hitting the ball back to the opponent’s side.

The sports of Volleyball is over 120 years old!

The sport originated in the United State, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S
that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports

In 1895, William G. Morgan, an Instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Associate (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball to create a
game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He
created the game of Volleyball (at that time called, min tonette). Morgan borrowed the net from
tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man’s head. During a
demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball
back and forth over the net, and perhaps “volleyball” would be a more descriptive name for the sport.
On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College the first game of “volleyball ” was played
