Have you ever had that feeling when you listen to a song and it just clicks?

In that case, it happened

to me when I hear this little piece – Nothing by Bruno Major. Back then I have known Bruno Major
since high school thanks to my friend. She was playing his songs in the car, and ever since that time
his work has really glued to my mind.

‘Nothing’ was released around September 2019. There is so much to this simple song that only lasts
for 2:45 minutes (which I wish, lasted forever). If you read the lyrics or listen to it while the song is
playing, I remembered it easily because the lyrics are actually simple, and yet it speaks volumes about
relationships that I can so much relate to.

[Lyrics]

Tracksuits and red wine, movies for two So shut all the windows and lock all the doors
We'll take off our phones and we'll turn off our We're not looking for no one, don't need nothing
shoes more
We'll play Nintendo though I always lose You'll bite my lip and I'll want you more
Cos you watch the TV while I'm watching you Until we end up in a heap on the floor
There's not many people I'd honestly say I don't
mind losing to You could be dancing on tabletops wearing high
But there's nothing like doing nothing with you heels
Drinking until the world spins like a wheel
Dumb conversation, we lose track of time But tonight your apartment has so much appeal
Have I told you lately I'm grateful you're mine Who needs stars, we've got a roof
We watch "The Notebook" for the 17th time And there's nothing like doing nothing with you
I will say it's stupid, then you catch me crying No, there's nothing like doing nothing with you
We are not making out on a boat in the rain or in a
house I painted blue
But there is nothing like doing nothing with you

I’ve highlighted above which lines that I’m particularly in love with. In general, I love how wholesome
the lyrics are written. In the first two lines, have you realized that it’s supposed to be “We’ll turn off
our phones and we’ll take off our shoes”? Frankly enough, the order is switched to add more whimsy
and carelessness, matching the tone of the song that values laziness and relaxation with your partner
over any formalities. This also connects to the first line that mentioned “red wine”, which indicates
that they have been drinking together and is now at cloud nine. To me, it felt like the singer/songwriter
is comfortable enough to express his “vulnerable” emotion with his partner and that made it into the
song.

“There’s not many people I’d honestly say I don’t mind losing to.” In a literal sense he’s saying there
is only a couple of people he wouldn’t mind losing to, and his partner is amongst them because he is
so in love that he sets aside his competitiveness and doesn’t mind seeing her winning because it makes
him happy to see her happy. This line hits me close to home because I admit that I am quite
competitive (even in video games) and yet I do this whenever I’m around my partner. The line
continued with “But there’s nothing like doing nothing with you,” which I can relate even more. This
line clearly states “nothing” twice. The fact that there’s “nothing” better than doing “nothing” and
doing nothing on itself. To me it emphasizes how the singer views this activity. He must really like it,
and so do I. Even though a partner isn’t doing anything, just enjoying each other’s company is already
enough to fill the plate.
“Dumb conversation, we lose track of time. Have I told you lately I’m grateful you’re mine.” This line
is just too sweet. He describes well the little things we do when we’re already super comfortable with
our significant other. We have dumb conversations about dumb stuff, and we talk until we realize it’s
already past dinnertime. Correlating to the other line, I’m constantly reminded of my partner
whenever I come across this line listening to the song. Being grateful of something or someone is a
very simple thought but has a depth to it. To me, it speaks louder than an “I love you”. When
someone’s grateful to have you by his/her side, it means that they’ve given a thought about how your
presence affects his/her life in such a way that it motivates the person to say that he/she’s grateful
for their partners.

Through the rest of the lyrics, I realized that this song is utterly sweet and simple. This song would talk
about that one person you have that comfortable quietness with, and how you cherish the little things
you do with your partner without being very extra. The way Bruno Major sings it is just wholesome
and pure that you feel like you want to fall in love so badly, and it’s just amazing how a song can make
you remember the good things in life.

Lyrics aside, I seriously love how the singer Bruno Major includes all the chords in his Lyrics Video. It
just shows how considerate he is as a person and a creator. It’s not often that singers would share
their masterpiece with their fans, and yet he does it creatively with a unique lyrics video, and to top it
off, people, including me, are very grateful for this. Meanwhile, the chord progression isn’t the same
4 chords throughout the song, which these days are a common issue with Rap and Pop. Additionally,
the chords he’s using fits the song just perfect. When this song first released, me and my partner tried
to learn the chords and sing a long, and it’s safe to say that this song has been our most favorite jam
to play, while doing nothing.
