A. Background of Study
The most significant medium of human communication is language (Sirbu, 2015,
p. 405). A language is the basis of the human community. With the help of it, people
inform, learn, communicate, persuade, challenge, support and entertain each other. On
the other hand, to make easier communication, here language has function to connect
everyone to say what’s on their mind. So, there is no missing communication among
them.
There are two languages taught in most school in Indonesia, namely Indonesian
and English. Indonesian is taught due to the establishment as our nation language since
our independence day was stated explicitly in our 1945 - constitution article 36 : while
English is chosen as the first foreign language to be taught in Indonesian schools for the
reason that we recognize the important role plays in the international world. (Ramelan,
1992:2).
Writing is one way of people to communicate with other people in order to
expressing their thinking and feeling. Writing is unnatural act like speaking. Writing
needs more effort than speaking does. Writing needs hard effort to manage the ideas and
arrange the words. As Raymond (1980, p.3) in Zahara (2014, p.1) states that writing is an
unnatural act form of speech.
Teaching English must have the four languages skills namely reading, speaking,
writing, and listening with the main emphasis on the reading skills. It means that the
English teachers should teach the four aspects, not only reading or speaking skill.
Listening and writing should also be taught to the students so that the students can master
all these four language skills. To enable the students master those language skills, English
teachers should provide materials, whish are appropriate with the curriculum and final
suitable method in the teaching and learning process. One of the methods suggested in
the new approaches introduced by the government is by using visual aids as a media in
the classroom as stated by Kreidlen Carol J (1965:1) that visual aids can be useful to the
language teachers.
B. Problem of the Research This research is aimed to answer these following questions:
1. Can the use of picture media improve students‟ ability in writing descriptive text at
the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Sampit?
2. How far is the improvement of the students‟ ability in writing descriptive text at the
tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Sampit?
C. Objectives of the Research Based on the statement of problems above, the objectives of
this research are as follows:
1. To find out whether the use of picture media can improve students‟ ability in writing
descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Sampit.
2. To identify how far the improvement of the students‟ ability in writing descriptive
text at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Sampit.
