INFORMATIVE SPEECH

How pandemic affects education? with APA citation.

The global pandemic brought by the COVID-19 figuratively changed the world. It

extraordinarily challenges the unprepared and unsupported educational system of the Philippines.

For starters, As cited by Senator Gatchalian (2020) from the report of the Department of

Education, at least 2.3 million children have not enrolled for the current school year as the

education system migrates to distance learning. This proves that most of the student and parents

cannot afford to be in a distance learning. Not all of us have a privilege to access in a quality

internet connection and mobile gadgets. Most of those family will always choose to have a food

on their table rather than to finance for their education.

For almost two pandemic months, most countries around the world have temporarily

closed educational institutions to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce

infections (UNESCO, 2020). This closure has affected more than 1.2 billion learners worldwide

with more than 28 million learners in the Philippines (UNESCO, 2020)

On the other hand, the implementation of online learning posed multiple risks, problems

and challenges to both the teachers and students, especially in the higher education institutions

(HEIs) (Bao, 2020). It will give another work load for both students and teachers.

The pandemic has clearly demonstrated the social, economic, political and environmental

realities and phenomena from varying perspectives, and the unsustainable conditions that many

of us have been living with; it has also produced new problems and challenges and changed the

way we live our lives.

The education sector is one of the highly affected by the COVID19 pandemic. In the

Philippines, where there is still a growing COVID-19 infection. The COVID-19 pandemic has

produced a new world full of challenges, dilemmas, as well as opportunities. It is up to us to

adapt and transform the challenges and dilemmas to opportunities for growth and development

for our nation and the global community (Simbulan 2020).
