1 Preliminary Design of Elements
The principal purpose for preliminary design of any structure is:
1. Obtain a clear picture of structural action.
2. Establish the dimensions of structural components.
3. Use the preliminary design as a check on the final design.
Preliminary design includes the approximation of size of the structural component of
the buildings for analysis. The preliminary bridges the gap between the design
concept and the detail phase.

Construction Material:
Concrete Grade: M25
Steel Grade: Fe500
Live load on slab = 4 KN/m2 (IS 875:1987 part II, Table I)
Live load on staircase = 3.5 KN/m2 (IS 875:1987 part II, Table I)
Live load on roof = 1.5 KN/m2 (IS 875:1987 part II, Table II)
Brick masonry = 19.2 KN/m3 (IS 875:1987 part I, Table I)
RCC Specific Weight = 25KN/ (IS 875:1987 part I)
Cement Fiber Board = 16.3 KN/m3

1.1 Preliminary Design of Slab

According to clausev23.2 of IS 456,
Deflection Control Criteria:
l
≤ αβγλ
d
where,
α is the basic value of vertical deflection

limit
α = 7 for cantilever
= 20 for simply supported
= 26 for continuous
β is the modification factor for tension reinforcement
λ is the reduction factor for ratios of span to effective depth for flanged section
γ is the modification factor for compression reinforcement
Considering critical slab BE-13,
1
Longer span (ly) = 7000 mm
Shorter span (lx) = 6725 mm
ly
=1.041<2. So, it is a two-way slab.
lx
Now, using deflection control criteria (cl. 23.2, IS456:2000)
l
≤ αβγλ
d
α = 26 and βλγ = 1.5
6725
d≥ = 172.44 mm > 150 mm
26 ×1.5
So, secondary beam should be provided.
Longer span (ly) = 6725 mm
Shorter span (lx) = 7000/2 = 3500 mm
ly
=1.92<2, so two way slab.
lx
3500
d≥ = 89.74 mm
26 ×1.5
adopt, d = 100 mm
Total effective cover = 30 mm
∴ Total depth of slab (D) = 100 + 30 = 130 mm

1.2 Preliminary Design of Beam

 For primary beam B1-B3,
Effective span (l) = 7000 mm
α = 26 and βλγ = 0.7
Now, using deflection criteria (cl. 23.2, IS456:2000)
l
≤ αβγλ
d
7000
d≥ = 384.62 mm
26 ×0.7
adopt, d = 400 mm
effective cover = 50 mm
∴ Total depth of primary beam = 400 + 50 = 450 mm
D
=1.5
B
∴ B = 300 mm

2
Hence, size of the primary beam = (300 × 450) mm2

For secondary beam,

Effective span (l) = 6900 mm
α = 26 and βλγ = 0.7
Now, using deflection criteria (cl. 23.2, IS456:2000)
l
≤ αβγλ
d
6900
d≥ = 379.121 mm
26 ×0.7
adopt, d = 390 mm
effective cover = 50 mm
∴ Total depth of primary beam = 390 + 50 = 440 mm
D
=1.5
B
∴ B = 293.33 300 mm
Hence, the size of the secondary beam = (300 × 440) mm2
Hence, we provide all the beam of size (300 × 450) mm2

1.3 Preliminary Design of Column

For design of column, column at bottom with
largest load is selected.
Taking, E-3 column
Influence area = 6.475*6.725 = 43.54 m2
Using IS-875, part I and II,
Unit weight of concrete = 25 KN/m3
Unit weight of wall = 21.2 KN/m3
Unit weight of floor finish=23 KN/m3
Unit weight of ceiling plaster=20.4
KN/m3
Unit weight of cement fiber board = 16.3 KN/m3
Imposed load=4 KN/m2

Calculation of load
1. Self weight of slab=.13*6.475*6.725*7*25 = 990.63 KN
2. Primary beam load= (6.475+6.725)*0.32*0.3*7*25 = 221.76 KN
3
3. Secondary beam load= (2.975+3.3625)* 0.32*0.3*7*25 = 106.47 KN
4. Floor finish load =0.02*6.475*6.725*7*23 = 140.21 KN
5. Load due to ceiling plaster =0.012*6.475*6.725*7*20.4 = 74.61 KN
6. Live Load
S. N Floor Calculation Load (kN)
1 Basement 43.54 *4 174.16
2 Ground 43.54 *4*.9 156.744
3 First 43.54 *4*.8 139.328
4 Second 43.54 *4*.7 121.912
5 Third 43.54 *4*.6 104.496
6 Fourth 43.54 *4*.6 104.496
7 Fifth 43.54 *4*.6 104.496
8 Sixth 43.54 *4*.6 104.496
9 Roof 43.54*3.5*.6 91.434
Total 1101.578

7. Load due to slab of roof = .13*3.5*6.725*25 + .02*3.5*6.725*23 = 87.32 KN

8.Load due beam of Roof = (3.5+6.725)*.0.32*0.3*25+(3.5+6.725)*.32*.3*25
= 49.08 KN
9.Load Floor Finish of Roof = 0.02*3.5*6.725*23 = 10.83 KN
10.Loading due Wall
Floor to Floor height = 3.740 m
a) For Basement Floor = no wall load
b) For Ground Floor = no wall load
c) For 1st Floor = no wall load
d) For 2nd Floor
Wall load = 0.7*16.3*0.075*3.610*4.755
= 14.69 KN
e) For 3rd Floor
Wall load = 0.7*16.3*0.075*3..610*5.380
= 16.62 KN
f) For 4th Floor
Wall load = 0.7*19.2*0.110*3.610*11.48+0.7*16.3*0.075*3.610*2.131
= 70.296KN
g) For 5th Floor
Wall load = 0.7*16.3*0.075*3.740*5.875
= 18.803 KN
4
h) For 6th Floor
Wall load = 0.7*19.2*0.110*3.610*6.1
= 32.556
Total Wall Load = 152.97 KN
11.Loading of Self Weight of Column
= 25*[(3.06-0.45) +7*(3.74-0.45)]*Ag
= 641 Ag
Total design load for all Storey including FOS and earthquake load
Pu = 1.5*1.5*(2935.46 + 641Ag)
= 6604.79 + 1142.25 Ag
According to clause 39.3 of IS456,
Pu= 0.4fck*Ac + 0.67fy*Asc
6604.79 + 1142.25 Ag = 0.4*25*Ac + 0.67*500*Asc ………(i)
Assume % of steel = 1%
Ac = (1-0.01) Ag= 0.99Ag
Asc = 0.01*Ag
Using in (i)
Or, (6604.79 + 1142.25 Ag)*10-3 = 0.4*25*0.99Ag + 0.67*500*.01*Ag
∴ Ag = 0. 545501 m2 = 545501.02mm2
Let us provide square column,
∴ Dx = Dy = √ 545501.02= 738.58 mm
Hence, we provide 750mm × 750mm Column
