The Lifeline Madhya Pradesh, Narmada is one of the 7 rivers of India which has been
regarded older than the Himalayas, ancient than Vindhaychal, primordial and pure like the
Ganges. A network of origin and flow of rivers is evident in Madhya Pradesh. Hence the
state is also known to be the maternal home of rivers. The river Narmada holds emotional,
spiritual, religious and environmental importance. This is the only living witness of Indian
mass life which is circumambulated. It is written thus about Narmada- 'O Rewa, You arise
from nectar, you the daughter of (mount) Maikal....' Narmada arises in a pool in Amarkantak
where the source of water is seen seeping from roots of trees. Narmada flows across 16
districts of Madhya Pradesh-touching Anuppur, Mandia, Dindori, Badwani, Alirajpur Jhabua, she
flows into Gujrat to fall in the Gulf of Khambhat.
Flowing towards the westwards, amidst the Vindhaynchal and Satpura mountain ranges,
Narmada covers more than 1107 ghats. The length of Narmada is 1310 kilometers out of
which 1079 kilometer fall in Madhya Pradesh. Keeping in mind the future of the Narmada,
the 'Namami Devi Narmade', an awareness and cleanliness drive was undertaken from 11
Dec 2016 from Amarkantak and concluded on 15 May, 2017. It included activities like plantation,
environmental preservation, creating awareness about processing of pollutants.
The main tourist spots falling on the path of Narmada are Amarkantak, Bhedaghat, Lamheta ghat,
Barmanghat, Sethani ghat, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar etc.
