Recreation and Leisure

Recreational Activities

People in their daily lives do something that makes them feel happy and divert their attention to
something that makes them feel relaxed

it is called recreation. Recreational sports are those activities which the primary purpose of the
activity is participation with the related goals of improved physical fitness fun and social
involvement

Recreational sports are usually perceived as being less stressful both physically and mentally on
the participants

Types of Recreation

1. Physical activities
This type of recreation reduces risk of heart attack and lowers blood cholesterol levels
it enables you to have strong bones muscles and joints
lower the risk of having osteoporosis
This activity includes sports, game, and fitness

2. Social activity
this type of recreation improves skill in socializing
enhances self-esteem and enables you to have a positive attitude
This activity includes parties and picnics

3. Camping and Outdoor Activities


It helps the person to have a fresh air to breathe
a good socialization
reduces stress and improves mood
This activity includes load trips, day camps and resident camps

4. Arts and Crafts Activities


it encourages children to play experiment in a fun and relaxed environment
It includes painting ceramics and scrap booking

5. Dramatic Activities
Helps the person to language development
use of symbols of sort of fantasy and reality

6. Musical Activities
This activity helps brain growth

achievement and discipline

This kind of activity only includes having fun of doing things for others

Man in its history, it has already own form of recreation but then attending so many things like
providing foods, shelter, security of their community, they find time for their relaxation and
enjoyment. The done it during at night apart from social gatherings.

However, when the world improves there is changes. Humans’ awareness also improves on how
they are going to improve their creativity and resourcefulness and how they develop their
character through recreational activities and how to use the recreational activities as cure for
the social needs.

Introduction to Recreational Activities

 Recreation includes any activities that is participated voluntarily during leisure which in the end
will give immediate satisfaction
- If a person do recreation there is an activity that makes him move (action) or even silent
activity.
- It is voluntarily participated, we submit ourselves to that activity. We provide leisure, means
time.
- We will have an end product that gives immediate satisfaction, personal enjoyment, self-
fulfillment or even sense of accomplishment
 It includes variety of activities such as games, sports, music, dances, art form, hobbies, and
certain amusements
 The growth of recreation is brought and a result of world’s development such as:

1. Advance of science and medicine


- The reason of growth of recreation
o Patients right to enjoy
o Sports medicine, one way to rehabilitate the injured

2. Widespread of education
- Through studies it widens knowledge
- Recreation is effective vehicle for social information

3. All sorts of inventions like technology and gadgets


- Exploration using technology to enjoy with others
- It improves quality of recreational activities and it serve as a communication (online game)
- Gym equipment at home, watch at YouTube for exercises.

Leisure

 Came from Latin word “LICERE” which means “TO BE PERMITTED”.


 A time left after the practical necessities of life have been attended to
 Eating, sleeping and bodily care are essential for existence
 Working(studying) is a must for subsistence
 The hours left after basic needs of men have been accomplished are referred to as leisure
 Leisure is referred to as an unobligated time, free or spare time or unoccupied time (extra
time)

Classification of Recreation and Leisure Activities

 Spectator
- See the activity, shouting, watching, cheering
 Participant Type
- Personal involvement
- One who play the instruments
- Taking part of the activity

 Public
- Activities are conducted publicly
- Exposed to so many people and crowds
- Players who are confident
 Private
- You wanted to be alone
- Own car, pasyal mag isa

 Commercial (picture of dance studio, musical studio, resorts, malls, playing, time zone,
computer shops for online games

- Beach, hotels, you pay for it
- You cannot enjoy if you do not pay

 Active Recreation
- Use of whole body system
- Adventurous activities
- Heighten adrenaline
- Allows you to know skills to survive
- Need training for skydiving
- Need proper suit
 Passive Recreation
- Doing activities which do not need to use the full energy
- Dating or bonding with family and friends
- Zoo, watch and observe the animal
- Picnic, make kwentos with friends

 Physical
- Identify muscles use when biking, lower leg muscle such as rectus femoris, vastus lateralis,
lastus mediales, harmstring, gatrosemius.
- Have special muscles to develop the muscle through attending activities
- Dumbbell, muscles develop is biceps, arm exercise at back muscle is tricep, upward back
muscle trapezius muscle
- Swimmer muscle develop more on lithisimus dorsi
 Mental
- Chess, we develop own strategy
- Domino, sungka, uno cards
