GENERAL INFORMATION

1. OVERVIEW
The SpectralWave Universal Node Broad Band Manager (hereinafter U-Node BBM) is
NEC’s next generation multi-service transport system designed for transmission networks.
The U-Node BBM has the flexibility and the scalability to keep up with a broad spectrum of
network topologies, and with expanding traffic.

The U-Node BBM is compliant with specifications, such as ITU-T standards, and has various
interfaces, which make U-Node BBM compatible with any type of equipment. By using the
latest technologies and devices, U-Node BBM reduces power consumption drastically,
compared to conventional equipment, and realizes economical trunk transmission equipment
by downsizing. The use of CID (NEC Craft Interface Device application software) or NMS
which controls the U-Node BBM operation by interpreting TL1 language — one of the
typical languages to operate transmission equipment — makes operation easy and smooth for
users.

As the core in the SpectralWave series, NEC’s optical network transmission equipment, the
U-Node BBM, supports long-haul transmission networks using SDH [SONET] 10G/2.5G
optical interfaces, and metropolitan networks using 600M, 150M, 50M optical interfaces and
STM1E electrical interfaces.

The U-Node BBM is operational with various interfaces such as DS3, and PDH interfaces
(2M, 34M, and 45M), and with LAN networks as well. U-Node BBM supports Ethernet
Interface, such as 1000BASE-X, 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T, and colored optical
interface which makes provisions available for WDM equipment.

As described above, the U-Node BBM which is operational with interfaces for various types
of transport networks, realizes network solutions for any user at a low cost.

2. APPLICATION
2.1 U-NODE BBM OPERATION

Equipment turn-up (activation), management, maintenance, and control of the U-Node BBM
can be operated easily and smoothly by using a CID (Craft Interface Device) which interprets
TL1 language. CID is an application software which runs on Windows operating system.

CID for U-Node BBM can also manage SpectralWave U-Node Regenerator (REG). In
addition, the NMS (network management system) produced by NEC is operational, using
either OSI protocol and TCP/IP protocol, which enables to support traffic management,
control, and maintenance of the entire network configured by the U-Node BBM and NEC
SDH products.

3. U-NODE BBM FEATURES

This section provides information on the capabilities and features of the U-Node BBM.

3.1 FUNCTIONAL FEATURES

3.1.1 Interface and Main Signals

3.1.1.1 Available Interfaces

U-Node BBM supports SDH [SONET] interfaces from 50M to 10G, and PDH interfaces of
2M, 34M and 45M. SDH or SONET mode can be selected for each line.
U-Node BBM can also accommodate 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-X
interfaces that can be mapped into SDH [SONET] system.

3.1.1.2 Colored Optical Interface

U-Node BBM can directly accommodate colored optical interface, which allows the U-Node
BBM to operate with a WDM system without using a transponder.

3.1.1.3 Virtual Concatenation

U-Node BBM supports Ethernet interface for seamless transport between Ethernet, and
enables IP packet traffic to be transported efficiently through existing SDH [SONET]
networks by changing their bands according to the traffic volume of packets.

3.1.1.4 Crossconnect
U-Node BBM has crossconnect functions of a high-order path at a maximum of 80G (1536-
time slots when using VC-3 high order path) and a lower-order path at a maximum of 10G
(4032-time slots when using VC-12 path or 192-time slots when using VC-3 lower order
path). Configurations of 1-way connection, 2-way connection, broadcast connection, and
hair-pin connection are available. Point-to-Point connection can be reconfigured to path
protection-type connection, changing network topology.

GENERAL INFORMATION

3.1.1.5 Standby Line Access (SLA)

For the line facilities configuring 1:1 Line Protection (Bidirectional) or Ring Protection,
specifying a path to the Protection side enables SLA. The SLA makes the best use of the
bandwidth of these lines where the Protection side path can also be in service while the Work
side path has no failure; if a failure occurs to the Work side path, the failed Work path will
take over the Protection side.

3.1.2 Package Protection

U-Node BBM provides a redundant package configuration in order to protect supporting
traffic from interruptions. If package failure occurs, high reliability is secured by the
package switching protection.

3.1.3 Line Protection

To protect the line from traffic failure or a sudden cable-cut, U-Node BBM provides a line
switching configuration. Linear, 2F MS-SPRing [2F-BLSR], and 4F MS-SPRing [4F-
BLSR] are supported as the switching types. APS mode in Linear Protection is configurable
in one of three modes: Japan, ITU-T (SDH), or SONET.

3.1.4 Path Protection

U-Node BBM supports the SDH [SONET] High Order Path Selection function and the Path
Protection function for all paths. It also supports the Lower Order Path Protection function
by adding the EXTWB shelf. Also, UPSR configuration is available by using the Path
Protection.

3.1.5 Overhead Access

U-Node BBM has the following accesses, in addition to the main signal, to other NEs within
the network:
! Overhead access by using User Channel Byte
! Orderwire access by using E1, E2 Byte
! Equipment control access by using DCC Byte
It is available to these overhead-access protection interlocked with Linear or 4F MS-SPRing
[4F BLSR] protection switching.
