HISTORY OF TORQUE

THEORY
ADAM WEBB
ORIGIN
• The study of torque originated with Archimedes when he was studying levers.

• Archimedes was trying to show mechanical advantage with levers and

pulleys.
ORIGIN CONT.
• Archimedes was an amazing mathematician, physicist, astronomer and
engineer.

• Archimedes also invented the Archimedes Screw, the Archimedes Claw, a

heat ray and he also theorized Archimedes Principle.

• Levers was his main thing he worked on the helped with the development
and definition of torque.
ORIGIN CONT.
• The term was used by the Romans to describe necklaces that were twisted.

• They were worn by nobleman to show that they were noble.

ORIGIN CONT.
• It couldn’t be defined until Isaac Newton.

• Newton was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer and theologian.

• Some of his most important works were his laws of motion and the Forces that
affect motion and inertia.

• He was working on the application of force in everyday life and how it

applies and relates to other physical quantities.
ORIGIN CONT.
• The first time the term “torque” was introduced into English scientific literature
was in 1884 by James Thomson.

• He is the brother of Lord Kelvin and he is a engineer

and a physicist.
WHAT IS TORQUE
• Torque is a rotational force on an object around a pivot point.

• Torque is the Force times the distance from the pivot point times the sin of
the angle between the force and the pivot point.
TORQUE IN EVERYDAY LIFE
• Anything from locking a door to turning a car steering wheel.
