Jeepney Journey by Richard Juan: A Tedtalk

Richard Juan talks about what it means to be a Filipino. It’s a pretty simple question, until
you actually ask yourself what is the main attribute that you have that represents being Filipino.
“What is the essence of being a Filipino?” is what Richard actually wants to answer. Its pretty hard
to give a concrete answer as we have different answers to this one peculiar question. If I were to
answer, I’ll just say that if we enjoy/practice Filipino culture, then we are Filipino. Even if that
culture can be different from other Filipinos, as we have a very diverse culture.

On the other hand, Delfin Villafuente talks about what it means to dream in the Filipino
culture-scape. We are often told to dream big and achieve a better life than our families, but that
shouldn’t be the case. We can dream of whatever we want to achieve, and our teachers and families
help us reach that goal; but the emphasis should be in making us feel that we can reach those goals
that we have set ourselves into.

Now why are these two videos held together in one module? I do not know. But it gives
me time to process things; problems that were taken for granted years ago, and still continue up to
this very day.

“What is the Filipino dream?”

It’s simple. Filipinos often dream simple; we just want to live a comfortable life for
ourselves and for our family. But, again, what is the Filipino dream? The usual “comfortable life”
is our dream, but it only stops at the time we have a career, it doesn’t go all the way until we retire.
Compared to the American dream, they want a comfortable and wealthy life by the time they retire
so they can start “living life.”

When can we truly say that we have dreams that relates to our fellow Filipinos?
