Poverty in the Midst of the Pandemic

I. Introduction

A. Hook: “Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man- made

and can be removed by the actions of human beings.”-Nelson Mandela.

B. Transition/Building Sentence: Poverty has always been around in the Philippines

even before COVID-19 started becoming rampant.

1. Supporting Detail 1: However, because of COVID-19, poverty rates have

gone higher than before.

2. Supporting Detail 2: Plenty of Filipinos are suffering due to the drastic

effects of poverty.

C. Thesis Statement: The increase in poverty rates during the COVID-19 pandemic

have effects on the Philippine society.

II. Body

A. Main Idea 1/ Topic Sentence: There has been an increase in poverty in the

Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Supporting Detail 1: The Philippines’ economic and social issues, such as

poverty, have worsened due to the pandemic and all of the COVID-19

restrictions that are being imposed in the country. (“Effects of COVID-19

on Child Poverty and Efficacy of Social Protection Responses in the

Philippines”, 2021).
2. Supporting Detail 2: In the Philippines, the number of people in poverty

due to the pandemic has increased compared to the previous years (de

Guzman, 2021).

a) Sub-detail 1: This year, there is a poverty rate of about 20 percent,

which would mean that 22 million out of the 110 million Filipinos

are in poverty (de Guzman, 2021).

b) Sub-detail 2: Compared to the amount of Filipinos in poverty last

2018, the amount this year has drastically increased from 17.7 to

20 million (de Guzman, 2021).

B. Main Idea 2/Topic Sentence: Due to the increase of poverty during the COVID 19

pandemic, Filipinos' livelihood and income are affected.

1. Supporting Detail 1: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plenty of

businesses closed down (Martin, 2020).

a) Sub-detail 1: Because of the massive amount of businesses closing,

different parts of the world experienced an economic shock

(Martin, 2020).

b) Sub-detail 2: There was an increase in unemployment and poverty

rates due to many business closures (Martin, 2020).

2. Supporting Detail 2: Due to the COVID-19 restrictions being imposed in

the country such as lockdowns, social distancing, and travel bans, plenty

of businesses closed down (Decerf, 2021).


a) Sub-detail 1: These COVID-19 restrictions are part of the

economic costs, which makes plenty of workers prohibited from

getting to their work sites. (Decerf, 2021).

b) Sub-detail 2: Plenty of debates were risen regarding on what is the

best policy when faced with a trade-off between lives and

livelihood due to the many workers getting prohibited from getting

to their workplace ( Decerf, 2021).

III. Conclusion

A. Restatement of Thesis Statement: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine

society has been affected by the increase in poverty rates.

B. Synthesis of Main Ideas: Poverty rates are already bad in the Philippines, and

due to the pandemic, it has become worse than before.

1. Supporting Detail 1: Because of this massive increase in the poverty rates

due to the pandemic, the lives of plenty of Filipinos were affected

drastically.

2. Supporting Detail 2: Many people lost their jobs because of the

restrictions and then because of this, the people descended into poverty.

C. Final Statement: In the end, in order to get rid of COVID-19 so that the poverty

rates would not go lower and lower, everyone must make an effort and help lower

the COVID-19 cases each day by being responsible.
