Course Description: This course examines the concept of risk, the principles of risk
management, private and social insurance mechanisms and the insurance industry. Special
attention is given to business and personal risks associated with loss of income, the owner- ship
of property and legal liability. Students are required to prepare and submit a written business
and/or personal plan of risk management.

Course Outcomes:
 Assess and protect against risks
 Understand and assess life, automobile, health, liability and commercial property
insurance/risk
 Analyze and understand the principles of retirement accounts and employee benefits
 Review how insurance-based products may assist with accumulation of wealth and
benefits

Grading:
Mid-term exam (30%)
Final Paper (60%)
Attendance (10%)
Total (100%)

Classroom Policies:
 Attendance is required and worth 10% of your final grade. If you do come to class, you
will probably do well in the class.
 You are responsible for all announcements made in class and on the Blackboard website.
 Please come to class on time, place cell phones on silent, and do not be disruptive to
others.
