Introduction
One of the very important parts of learning a language is learning vocabulary. Leisure time English
learning series “Let’s learn academic words” book strengthens English vocabulary and familiarizes
English learners with the academic word list which helps learners to build confidence to communicate
successfully, distinctly and vividly in an academic environment.
The English language consists of an enormous number of words. It is impossible for anyone to know
all the words in the language, which means that you must choose the words to learn.
There are no clear rules to help you choose the words as you learn vocabulary. What we have seen so
far is that vocabulary in any language is a complex issue. Most people think of only single words, but
there are many other kinds of vocabulary that present additional and important challenge, for example,
the academic word list. The purpose of this book is to enlarge the vocabulary of students regarding the
academic word list.

Structure of the book

Let’s Learn Academic Words is a book for students to learn, practice and revise academic words.
There are over 550 words, many crosswords, puzzles and exercises in 12 units.
The book includes the list of academic words supplied with definition, Russian equivalent and examples
of use.
The overview is divided into 3 parts.
• Learning vocabulary and its meaning.
• Practicing vocabulary through puzzles and crosswords
• Doing cloze exercises

In the first part there are words in the alphabetical order with transcription, definition and translation.
The second part includes filling-in-gap exercises, to practice the words in context.
The third part consists of crosswords and puzzles which help to remember spelling and definition. There
is an answer key and academic word list at the back of the book.
How to use the book for self-study
Students need to both comprehend and produce academic language. Although the ability to produce
academic language is valuable to understand lectures in English, to function in seminars and discussions
and to read their major related literature.
You shouldn’t go through materials mechanically. It’s better to study the information about the meaning
and the use of the word. After that you do filling in gaps exercise to practice and learn how to use the
words in context. Finally, you can solve the word puzzle and crosswords to learn definition of words.
And most important of all, don’t forget the real purpose for which you learned these words: to use them
in your oral and written speech.
Learning academic language will enable you to be an efficient language user in any field of study when
you take notes during a lecture, prepare an academic report or write a term paper and so on.
To the teacher
This explanation of academic language has important implications for supporting students. In
essence, teachers have been strongly encouraged to teach academic vocabulary. Teachers need support
in moving from teaching academic vocabulary to teaching the language of their content areas. The
purpose of compiling these words in one book is to make it so the teacher will be able to take all the
words in the Academic Word List and put them in a format that will make it easier to integrate them
into a usable vocabulary program, or just to use in daily lessons. Teachers can use this book as a
supplementary material in all classes to strengthen students’ vocabulary stock.
