Abstract

Dahilog, Ruby B.

“The Effects of Tiered Instruction in Stoichiometry on the Academic

Performance and Attitude of Students”.Unpublished Master’s Thesis,
Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay City, March 2015.

The study investigated the effects of tiered instruction in

stoichiometry on the academic performance and attitude of students in

Grade 9. This was conducted in Bukidnon National High School,

Malaybalay City during the third grading period, SY 2014-2015. The

study compared the academic performance in stoichiometry between

those students taught with tiered instruction and those students taught

with conventional (lecture) method.

A quasi-experimental non-equivalence control group research

design was used in the study. The students in the control and the

experimental group were matched according to their learning style and

chemistry abilities based on their second grading proficiency level. Data

were gathered using a researcher made achievement test with a

reliability of 0.876. The results were analysed using the mean, standard

deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), at 0.05 level of

significance. An attitude scale towards stoichiometry were used to assess

students’ attitude when taught with tiered instruction.

xi
The study revealed a significant difference in the academic

performance between the students taught with tiered instruction and

those taught with the conventional (lecture) method, in favour of the

experimental group. The students taught in stoichiometry using tiered

instruction had approaching proficiency (AP) in their performance level. A

favourable attitude towards stoichiometry was shown by students who

were taught with tiered instruction.
