Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

Before we go to our new topic for today, let

us first check your assignment.
1. Two angles are complementary angles
where the sum of their measures is 90.
Angles x and y are complementary
angles, and angle x is 3 more than twice
angle y. Find the two angles.
Solution:
1. a. Two angles are complementary when
the sum of their measures is 90 degrees.
b. x + y=90 eq. 1
x=2 y +3 eq. 2
c. Solving by substitution,
x=2 y +3
x + y=90
2 y+ 3+ y=90
3 y=90−3
3 y=87
y=29
Solving for angle x,
x=2 y +3
x=2(29)+3
x=58+3
x=61

Angle x measures 61 degrees while angle

y measures 29 degrees.
d.Eq. 1
x + y=90
61+29=90
90=90 True
Eq. 2
x=2 y +3
61=2(29)+3
61=58+ 3
61=61 True

Since the values of the variables satisfy the

equation. Thus, Angle x is 61 degrees and
Angle y is 29 degrees.

B. Lesson Proper

Again, what are the steps in solving

problems involving linear equations?
First is to choose on what variable will
represent the given data.
Second?
Translate the verbal phrases to mathematical
equations.
Third?
Solve the linear equations using the
substitution or the elimination method.
Lastly?
Check if the values are correct by substituting
the values to the original equation.
Very good. Let us consider these examples
for you to further understand what it means.
1. One number is the other number
increased by 3. Their sum is 7. Find the
numbers.
Solution:
a. Let x=the one number
y=the other number
b. x + y=7 eq.1
x= y +3 eq. 2
c. Solving the system by substitution,
x= y +3
x + y=7
( y +3)+ y=7
2 y+ 3=7
2 y=7−3
2 y=4
y=2
Solving for x,
x= y +3
x=2+3
x=5
The numbers are 5 and 2.

d. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=7
5+2=7
7=7 True
Eq. 2
x= y +3
5=2+ 3
5=5 True
Since all conditions are satisfied, hence the
solution is correct.

2. The sum of two numbers is 56. Their

difference is 18. Find the numbers.
a. Let s=the smaller number
b=the bigger number
b. b+ s=56 eq.1
b−s=18 eq. 2
c. Solving the system by elimination,
b+ s=56
(+) b−s=18
2 b=74
b=37
Solving for s,
b+ s=56
37+ s=56
s=56−37
s=19
The numbers are 37 and 19.

d. Check:
Eq. 1
b+ s=56
37+19=56
56=56 True
Eq. 2
b−s=18
37−19=18
18=18 True

Since all conditions are satisfied, hence the

solution is correct.

Kindly try this.

3. The sum of two numbers is 51. If one

number is twice the other, what are the
numbers?

Who would like to answer number 3?

Solution:
3. a. Let x=number
y=another number
b. x + y=51 eq. 1
x=2 y eq. 2
c. Solving by substitution method,
x=2 y
x + y=51
2 y+ y=51
3 y=51
y=17
Solving for x,
x=2 y
x=2(17)
x=34

The numbers are 17 and 34.

d. Check:
Eq. 1 x + y=51
34+ 17=51
51=51
Eq.2
x=2 y
34=2(17)
34=34
Since all conditions are satisfied, hence the
solution is correct.

C. Generalization

Again, what are the steps in solving problems

involving systems of linear equations?
The steps in solving problems involving
systems of linear equations are:
1. Choose on what variable will represent
the given data.

2. Translate the verbal phrases to

mathematical equations.

3. Solve the linear equations using the

substitution or the elimination method.

4. Check if the values are correct by

substituting the values to the original
equation.

IV. EVALUATION

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Answer the item completely. Answer it in a 1 Solution:

whole sheet of paper. By pair. 1. a. Let x=smaller number
1. The sum of two numbers is 160. Four y=larger number
times the smaller number and 1/3 of the b. x + y=160 eq. 1
larger number is equal to 288. Find the 1
4 x+ y=288 eq. 2
two numbers. 3
c. Solving by elimination method,
−1 ( x+ y =160 )−x− y =−160
12 x+ y =864
11 x=704
x=64
Solving for y,
x + y=160
64+ y=160
y=160−64
y=96
The numbers are 64 and 96.
d. Check:
Eq. 1 x + y=160
64+ 96=160
160=160
1
Eq. 2 4 x+ y=288
3
1
4 (64)+ (96)=288
3
256+32=288
288=288

Since all conditions are satisfied, hence the

solution is correct.

V. ASSIGNMENT

Answer number 2 on page 87. Put it in a1 whole sheet of paper.

2. A two-digit number is 7 times the sum of the digits. If the digits are reversed, the result is
