Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

Before we are going to discuss our topic for

today, let us first have an activity. You will be
grouped according to the column were you
belong. So, there will be given puzzled pieces
to your group and within 2 minutes you are
going to form those puzzled pieces.

After two minutes, your group will going to

identify the figure formed. Additional 5 points
will be given to the groups who can
accomplish the task and can identify the figure
and these points will be added to their group
work later on.

Answer:
1.
1. 1000 peso bill
2. 500 peso bill
3. 200 peso bill
4. 100 peso bill
5. 50 peso bill
2. 6. 20 peso bill
7. 10 peso coin
8. 5 peso coin
9. 1 peso coin

B. Lesson Proper

What can you say about the activity?

Interesting and challenging.
Did you enjoy the activity?
Yes ma’am.
What did you notice about the figure
formed?
They are all Philippine peso money.
Very good. Any idea why did I let you
formed those Philippine money?
It is because it is related to our topic for today.
And that is all about money.
That is absolutely correct. Today, we will
be accountants because we will be discussing
about Money-related problems.

Again, what are the steps in solving

problems involving linear equations?
First is to choose on what variable will
represent the given data.
Second?
Translate the verbal phrases to mathematical
equations.
Third?
Solve the linear equations using the
substitution or the elimination method.
Lastly?
Check if the values are correct by substituting
the values to the original equation.
Very good. Let us consider these examples
for you to know how it is done.

1. MJ’s allowance is Php.150 a day. He

spent Php.80.00 on his food and fare.
When he got home, he still has 16 coins
in Php.10-coin and Php.1-coin.  How
many Php.10-coin do MJ have if he
have a total of Php.70.00?
What is our first step?
Represent the given data.
a. Let x-number of Php.10-coin
y-number of Php.1-coin
Very good. Using the representations, the
equations would be:
b. x + y=16 eq. 1
10 x+ y=70 eq. 2

I need one volunteer from group 1 to solve

the equations using any method.
Solving by elimination method.
x + y=16
10 x+ y=70
−9 x=−54
−9 x −54
=
−9 −9
x=6
Solving for y,
x + y=16
6+ y=16
y=16−6
y=10
Excellent. Let us now check if the values
satisfy the equations.

c. Check:
Eq. 1
x + y=16
6+10=16
16=16 (True)
Eq. 2
10 x+ y=70
10(6)+10=70
60+10=70
70=70 (True)

Since the values satisfy both equations.

Therefore, MJ has 6 Php.10-coin.

2. Jeffrey has a set of 5-peso coins and 1-

peso coins with a total value of
Php43.00. how many of each kind does
he has if he has 19 coins in all?
Solution:

Group 2 will do the first step. Represent the given data.

a. Let x= number of 5-peso coins
y=number of 1-peso coins

The representations will give us:

b.
x + y=19 (total number of coins is 19) eq. 1
5 x+ y=43 (total value of coins is Php43) eq. 2

What method are we going to use? Elimination method.

That is correct. So let us solve.

b. Solving by elimination method,

−1 ( x+ y =19 )−x− y =−19(eq .1)
5 x+ y=43 (eq. 2)
4 x=24
x=6
Solving for y,
x + y=19
6+ y=19
y=13
Are we done? Not yet ma’am.

Let us do the last which is to check

whether the values will satisfy the equations.

d. Check:
Eq.1
x + y=19 6+13=19
19=19 True
Eq. 2
5 x+ y=43
5(6)+13=43
30+13=43
43=43 True

Since the values of the x and y satisfy the

equation. Thus, Jeffrey has 6 five-peso coins
and 13 one-peso coins.

This time, you are going to answer this

problem. I will give you 15 minutes to answer
it in the manila paper that will be given to you.
After answering, 2 groups will present their
solutions on the board and explain how they
arrived with their answers. The groups that will
be going to present will be given additional
two points on their output.

3. A piggy bank contains Php.118.00

worth of coins in Php1- and Php5-
denominations. The number of Php5-
coin is two more than the number of
Php1-coin. How many coins of each
king does the piggy bank contain?
Solution:
3.
a. Let x= the number of Php.1-coin in
the piggy bank and
Y=the number of Php.5-coin in
the piggy bank.
b. x +5 y=118 eq. 2
y=x +2 eq. 1
c. Solving by substitution method.
Substitute y=x+2 to eq. 2
x +5 y=118
x +5( x +2)=118
x +5 x+10=118
6 x=118−10
6 x=108
x=18
Solving for y,
y=x +2
y=18+ 2
y=20
d. Check:
Eq. 1
y=x +2
20=18+2
20=20 (True)
Eq. 2
x +5 y=118
18+5(20)=118
18+100=118
118=118 (True)

The piggy bank contains 18 Php.1-coin

and 20 Php.5-coin.

C. Generalization

Again, what are the steps in solving problems

involving systems of linear equations? The steps in solving problems involving
systems of linear equations are:
1. Choose on what variable will represent
the given data.
2. Translate the verbal phrases to
mathematical equations.
3. Solve the linear equations using the
substitution or the elimination method.
4. Check if the values are correct by
substituting the values to the original
equation.

IV. EVALUATION

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Bring out 1 whole sheet of paper and

answer this problem completely.

1. A collection of 25-cent coins and one-

peso coins has a total value of
Php.16.50. If there are 30 coins in all,
how many of each kind were there?
Solution:
1.
a. Let x=number of 25-cent coins
y=number of one-peso coins
b. x + y=30 eq. 1
.25 x+ y=16.50 eq. 2
c. Solving by elimination method,
−1 ( x+ y =30 )−x− y=−30
.25 x+ y=16.50
−.75 x=−13.50
x=18
Solving for y,
x + y=30
18+ y =30
y=12
d. Check:
Eq. 1 x + y=30
12+18=30
30=30
Eq. .25 x+ y=16.50
.25(18)+12=16.50
4.5+ 12=16.50
16.50=16.50

Since all conditions are satisfied, hence the

solution is correct. There are 18 25-cent coins
and 12 one-peso coins.

V. ASSIGNMENT

Answer the problem completely. Put it in a 1 whole sheet of paper,

1. Victor has Php.96.00 in coins. The number of Php.5-coin is thrice the number of
Php.1-coin. How many coins of each type were there?
