(1) (a) Let I ⊆ R be an interval, and for each n ∈ N let fn : I → R be a function.

Define what it means for the sequence of functions (fn ) to converge uniformly
to a function f : I → R.
[4 marks]
(b) If each fn : I → R is continuous, and if (fn ) converges uniformly to f : I → R,
then f is continuous. Prove this result.
[8 marks]
(c) In each case, find the pointwise limit of the given sequence of functions and
determine whether or not the convergence is uniform, giving reasons for your
answers:
(i) fn (x) = x2n on I = [0, 1); [4 marks]
(ii) fn (x) = n1/2 xn on I = [0, b] where b < 1. [4 marks]

(2) (a) Define the notion of uniform continuity of a function on an interval I of R.

[4 marks]
(b) If f : I → R is differentiable on an open interval I and if its derivative satisfies
|f 0 (x)| ≤ M for all x ∈ I for some M < ∞, show that f is uniformly continuous
on I. [7 marks]
(c) Determine which of these functions are uniformly continuous and which are not.
Explain your answer.
(i) f (x) = sin x on (−∞, ∞). [3 marks]
(ii) f (x) = x4 on [0, ∞). [3 marks]
x
(iii) f (x) = 1+x 2 on [−1, 2]. [3 marks]

(3) (a) State a criterion in terms of sequences of step functions

R for a function f : R → R
to be Riemann-integrable and for evaluation of f in such a case. [4 marks]
(b) Use your criterion to show that the function defined by f (x) = x for 0 ≤ x < 2,
f (x) = 2 for 2 ≤ x ≤ 3 and f (x) = 0 otherwise, is Riemann-integrable, and
calculate its integral. [8 marks]
(c) True or false? Justify your answer.
(i) For every f such that f 2 is Riemann-integrable, f is also Riemann-
integrable. [4 marks]
(ii) For every f such that f is Riemann-integrable, f 3 is also Riemann-
integrable. [4 marks]

(4) (a) Does ρ(x, y) = max{1, |x − y|} define a metric on R? Justify your answer.
[3 marks]
(b) Show that σ(x, y) := |x − y|1/3 defines a metric on R. [6 marks]
(c) Is the metric σ equivalent to the standard metric |x − y|? If so, prove it; if not,
explain why not. [5 marks]
