CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, RECCOMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION

This chapter presents the summary of this study, the findings, conclusions drawn, and
the suggestions of the researchers with regard to the effectiveness of rice hull and saw dust in
prolonging the shelf life of tomato.

SUMMARY

Two tomato varieties was used in conducting this study; ‘Ilocos Red’ and ‘Diamante

max’. The primary objective of this study was to identify the effectiveness of rice hull and

saw dust in prolonging the shelf life of tomato or how different the tomatoes depending on

the kind of materials used. Specifically, this study sought to find which among the treatments

is the best medium in prolonging the shelf life of tomato, how does rice hull and saw dust

affects the life of tomato in terms of visual quality rating, color index, chilling injury, color

quantity rating, shriveling index, firmness index and percent rotting and lastly the relationship

of saw dust and/or rice hull that affects the shelf life of tomato. However, due to lack of

equipment, firmness will be measured subjectively using the finger feel method.

The study was conducted at General Artemio Ricarte Senior High School at #35 Bil-

loca, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte from December 2019 to February 2020. This study used the

quantitative research specifically, experimental research design along with three (3)

treatments that has four (4) replicates each and one controls for the materials used. One (1)

replicate from each treatment used a spare in a case of certain circumstances. The replicates

were laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD).

Findings

After the treatments were observed and the data gathered were analyzed and

interpreted, the findings emerged:

1. The best medium in prolonging the shelf life of tomato was Treatment 1 which is pure

rice hull along with Diamante max.

2. Numerically, Treatment 1 or the treatment of pure rice hull has the best effect in

prolonging the shelf-life of tomato, specifically Diamante max.

3. There is a significant relationship between rice hull and/or sawdust in prolonging

shelf life of tomato.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. Rice hull is an effective way to prolong the shelf life of tomato because it is highly

resistant to moisture penetration, fungal decomposition and they do not transfer heat.

2. Using rice hull to prolong the shelf life of tomato is an effective way to prolong the

visual quality rating, color quality rating, shriveling index, and firmness index of

tomato.

3. Rice and/or sawdust’s moisture absorbent characteristic plays an important role in

prolonging the shelf life of tomato.

Recommendations

The following recommendations suggested are based on the findings and conclusions

presented:

1. The farmers should consider using pure rice hull in prolonging the shelf life of

tomatoes as some prove that it is an effective medium especially to the variety

Diamante Max which has a longer shelf life compared to Ilocos red based on the

results.

2. The local agricultural industry of the City of Batac should educate more people about

how they can prolong the shelf life of tomatoes for more economic possibilities and

greater improvements.

3. Future researchers should try to use rice hull on other varieties of tomatoes. They

should also conduct further studies on other uses of this medium for agricultural

purposes.
