INTRODUCTION
Zaneta: Hello everyone and welcome to the Virtual Academy’s first ever Relay For Life! My name is
Zaneta and I’m thrilled to be here as one of your committee Chairs. We’re all here because cancer has
affected our lives in one way or another. At the OCSB Virtual Academy, we believe life is bigger than
cancer. Far too many of us here today understand the impact cancer has had on so many lives. Whether it
is through a diagnosis or death of a family member, friend or a teacher, we’re all here because cancer has
directly touched our lives. Before we get started, we would like to acknowledge that we are all participating
in this virtual Relay For Life on the unceded land and territory of the Algonquin peoples.

And now Marcus will go over some rules and housekeeping.

(Mr. Nuyens will share the Schedule)

Marcus: Hi everyone, I’m Marcus! So the way that it’s going to work is that if there is any bad
behavior, inappropriate names in games, inappropriate submissions, etc. you will be removed and will be
ineligible to win prizes. Just make sure that you are respectful and follow the golden rule. As you can see on
the screen, we have a jampacked evening tonight, and this schedule has lots of important information and
links. You can access it any time by going to YellKey.com/TABLE

We ask that you change your display name to be your first name and first initial of your last name. This will
make it easier for us to identify winners for prizes, and ensure that they get to you. The same goes for when
you break off into your game rooms. When filling out a Google Form, make sure that you are signed in with
your @ocsbstudent account.

Lastly, as you can see, the chat function has been turned off for all attendees during the Zoom Webinar, so
if you have an important question for us, please use the Q & A feature and one of our panelists will
hopefully be able to help you out.
To get us started on our first activity, here are Zaneta and Elita.

(Marcus turns camera off)

(Zaneta & Elita turn cameras on)
(Mr. Nuyens puts up the Scavenger Hunt slide)

SCAVENGER HUNT: Zaneta & Elita

Elita: Thanks Marcus! Hi everyone, I’m Elita! Our first activity of the evening will get you up and out
of your seat. In a moment, the slide on your screen will show a list of things we need you to search for in
your house. You will have 5 minutes to try and find as many items as possible, take a picture, and upload
them to the Google Form linked in the chat and on the next slide.

Zaneta: Make sure that you are logged in with your @ocsbstudent account. The form will
automatically close after the timer runs out, so make sure you save enough time at the end to upload your
picture and submit the form. Check off all of the items you found, but if you check off an item that isn’t in
your picture, you will lose points. The participants with the most amount of points will be entered to win a
prize basket!

Elita: Are your phones ready? Set… Go!

(Go to next slide - Music plays as timer goes)
(Zaneta & Elita turn cameras off) **Should give one minute warning
Elita: And welcome back! Hopefully you had the chance to upload a picture with all the items that
you found! And you got a bonus point for being in it! The winner of the scavenger hunt will be announced
later this evening, so stay tuned. We’ll now check out some of the talent in the Virtual Academy: here is
grade 12 student, Trinity Armstrong on the piano:

(Mr. Nuyens plays talent show video #1: Trinity Armstrong - 2 minutes)

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE & HISTORY OF RELAY

(Kirsten turns camera on)

Kirsten: Thanks to Trinity for submitting that video of her playing the Prelude in C Major. We would
now like to turn it over to our Principal of the Virtual Academy, Mr. David Nash.

(Mr. Nuyens plays Mr. Nash’s Video - 2 min 43 sec)

Kirsten: Thank you Mr. Nash for sending in that message for all of our students to see. Relay For Life
offers us the chance to create hope for those living with the disease. With 1 in 2 Canadians diagnosed with
cancer in their lifetime, your contribution has never been more important.

By participating in and collecting donations for Relay For Life, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society,
we are leading the charge by helping fund game-changing research on all cancers, advocating to make
healthy living easier and supporting Canadians affected by the disease.

Let’s now watch a short video about the history of Relay for Life.

(Mr. Nuyens plays HISTORY OF RELAY video - 2 min 37 sec)

Kirsten: Next up, we will be moving into our first set of activities for the evening. For those of you who
are joining our Kahoot! make sure you have the app downloaded on your phone or go to Kahoot.it and get
ready to compete in a trivia challenge! For those of you playing Among Us or Drawasaurus, the codes and

Mission Moment & Updates: Monifa & Avani

Monifa: A big thank you to the talented Eden Weese for her video performance of Sweater Weather.

Taking an updated look at our Relay For Life website, I would like to announce that we have raised over
$50,000 dollars! Remember that donations will continue to be accepted into the month of April - so if you
have any family members or friends that would still like to support the cause, or if they forgot to donate to
your page - all fundraising links will remain active for quite some time in the future.

Avani: We would now like to take a minute and announce the names of some of the Cancer
survivors who we have here with us tonight, and who have participated in the Relay For Life campaign.
These folks are the living proof of why it is such an important cause, and why we are all striving for a world
without cancer. In a normal year, without COVID, we would now be starting our ‘Survivors Lap’ where these
individuals would lead the entire school around the track, for one lap together in solidarity. Our Relay For
Life survivors are:

Michael Meehan
Jadon Xia
Micayla Begin
Angela Harrison
Jillian Nino
And of course, Zachary Rogerson - one of our topmost fundraisers, and who you will hear from later this
evening!

Thank you so much to all of you, for your well-fought battles and experiences with such a terrible disease.
We are all here in support of you!

Luminary Ceremony & Intro Speakers: Marcus & Iqtina

(Marcus & Iqtina turn cameras on)

Marcus: While we have made tremendous progress, more work is needed because far too many of
our loved ones continue to be diagnosed with cancer. In just a few moments we are going to be starting our
luminary ceremony. Please dim the lights in your house, feel free to light a candle if you have one, and join
us in this reflective time. Use this time to reflect on how cancer has impacted your life and share your
luminary with us all. We encourage you to post a picture of your luminary on your social media, tag us
@relay4lifeVA and @YouthRelay and use the #VARelay].

Iqtina: We also mentioned that at Relay we celebrate survivorship. Next up, we will be hearing from
an inspiring survivor speaker Zachary Rogerson, a grade 8 student here in the Virtual Academy who has
had cancer twice, and is going to tell us his story.
(Mr. Nuyens plays Zach Rogerson’s Survivor video - 4 min 53 sec)

Marcus: Relay For Life is about creating more survivors and Zach’s story reminds us how far we’ve
come and how together, we are bigger than cancer. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. We also
have another survivor to speak to us about her story..

It is my honor to welcome Mrs. Lisa Cameron to share a bit of her story. Some of you might know Mrs.
Cameron as the principal of Holy Trinity.

(Mr. Nuyens plays Lisa Cameron’s Survivor video - 2 min 24 sec )

Marcus: Survivors - you are special members of our community, who symbolize the progress we’ve
made against cancer. You all are an inspiration, and we can’t wait to Relay with you.

Iqtina: We are now going to move into our luminary ceremony.

In spite of the progress mentioned earlier, more work is needed because far too many of our loved ones are
being touched by cancer.
Luminaries are glowing tributes are a powerful visual representation of the impact cancer has on our
community with each luminary representing a life – a life taken by cancer, a survivor, or support for a person
living with the disease.

These luminaries burning brightly honors and remembers the memory of someone who is loved by
someone here; a parent, child, sibling, grandparent, teammate, teacher, neighbor, friend.
For those of you remembering a loved one who has died of cancer, whether your loss is recent or long ago,
may you find comfort in being surrounded by others who have experienced similar losses and who care so
deeply about this cause. While some of our loved ones are no longer here physically, memories of them
burn bright like a light in our hearts.

Marcus: We would like to thank the students of the virtual academy who have lent their talents as part
of the musical accompaniment to this virtual luminary ceremony: Hephzibah Omunizua and Ryan Mathias.

(Mr. Nuyens plays luminary video - 6 min 23 sec).

Iqtina: Thank you all so much for participating and reflecting in our luminary ceremony. Whether it
was your first luminary ceremony, or you’ve participated in many – we thank you for sharing that moment
with us. I’d now like to introduce our next entertainment act by Zeya Lu on the piano.

(Mr. Nuyens plays talent show video #5 Zeya Lu - Flower Dance - 2 min 43 sec)

CLOSING CEREMONY

Sandra: Well, it’s been an amazing event and we have almost reached the end of our virtual Relay
For Life. In just a few minutes, when this stream ends, we are going to ask everyone to get outside whether
it be tonight or sometime this week to walk some laps in honor of the incredible survivor stories that we
heard today.
We hope you all had a great time. You are truly an amazing group of people. You came here today because
you wanted to help fundraise for the CCS to create a world where no Canadian fears cancer. Maybe you
are here because you are a survivor yourself, maybe you Relayed to show support to someone you know
who has had cancer, and maybe you Relayed because you want to honor the life of someone you lost to
cancer. The fact is, today all of us are here because we want to make a difference.

Contest Winners: All Events

Grand Prize winners: __________________ (Mr. Kwai & Mr. Nuyens to take care of this part)

(Mr. Nuyens will share the Prizes page)

Brianna: Virtual Academy, we’ve raised an incredible $ [amount]!

We want you to remember the feeling of accomplishment you feel right now. Remember how much of a
difference you have made toward the cancer cause by fundraising and being here!

We will continue to carry with us that feeling as we re-imagined relay this year. We will remember what it felt
like to join forces with our school to celebrate our survivors, friends, teachers and family who have been
affected by cancer. And, we will leave here today knowing that together, we are bigger than cancer!
Thank you everyone for joining us, this part of the event is now over and we encourage you all to walk in
your neighborhoods in the next few days. Thank you for relaying with us in a new way this year.

Happy Easter Weekend!
