Developmental
Dyslexia:
an Invisible SpLD
2021 April 14 | 4:00- 5:30pm = Zoom Webinar
Developmental dyslexia is an invisible SpLD (Specific Learning Disability)
whose difficulty becomes known only when assessed appropriately. It is
neurobiological in origin with genetic heritability. Yet the prevalence of
dyslexia differs across different languages - in English this is said to be
10-12% forming a large minority group, in Italian 3-4% and in Japanese
0.2%-6.9% depending on the different scripts which are used in Japan. In
my talk I will address why this is the case using data from behavioural/
experimental/neuroimaging research in alphabetic languages, e.g.,
English, Finnish, French, and Italian and in non-alphabetic languages
such as in Chinese and Japanese. I will also demonstrate that it is possib]
to be dyslexic in one language but not in the other in a bilingual
individual.
I will then suggest the importance of developing a dyslexia interve:
programme appropriate for each language rather than borrowint
adopting the intervention-programmes developed for another langyage,
eg. English.
