Resume Developing Research Background

Research background is a brief outline of the most important studies that have been
conducted so far presented in a chronological order. Research background should also
include a brief discussion of major theories and models related to the research problem.
When writing research background, you also need to demonstrate how your research relates
to what has been done so far in this research area.

Research background is written after the literature review. Therefore, literature review has to
be the first and the longest stage in the research process, even before the formulation of
research aims and objectives, right after the selection of the research area.

Once the research area is selected, the literature review is commenced in order to identify
gaps in the research area, and the research aims and objectives need to be closely associated
with the elimination of this gap in the literature.

Format of Research Background

Writing a research background has some formats that should consider, they are:

1. Giving a general overview of the thesis topic and introduce the main ideas
2. Giving detailed and precise information about all the methodologies used in the research
(can take up to several paragraphs)
3. Citing the sources to avoid plagiarism
4. Introducing the experiment by describing the choice of methodology briefly

The research background has a list of required criteria. As a researcher, we need to ensure
those criteria are ultimately included because the whole idea of the background of the study
will lead the reader to comprehend the core reason of raising and investigating the proposed
research questions. Here is the list of those elements based on the article written by Johnson

1. Containing reviews of the area being researched

2. Containing available information about the main problem of the study
3. Capturing the previous researches related to the proposed issue
4. Indicating the history of the issue of the research from the previous researches
