Learning Outcomes
» Explain what environmental science is, and how it
draws on different kinds of knowledge.
» List and describe some current concerns in
environmental science.

1.1 What is Environmental Science?

Environment
» French (environner: to circle or surround)
» Simply, all that surrounds us.
» Conditions that surround an organism or group
of organisms.
» The complex of social or cultural conditions
that affect an individual or community.

1.1 What is Environmental Science?

Environmental Science
» Is the systematic study of our environment and our proper
place in it
» Highly interdisciplinary
» Mission-oriented

As you study environmental science, you should learn the

following:
» awareness and appreciation of the natural and built
environment;
» knowledge of natural systems and ecological concepts;
» understanding of current environmental issues; and
» the ability to use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
on environmental issues.

1.1 What is Environmental Science?

Environmental Education
» Environmental education is the process that which people
develops awareness, knowledge and concern of the
environment and its diverse values and processes, and
learns to use this understanding to preserve, conserve and
utilize the environment in a sustainable manner for the
benefit of present and future generations.

» Environmental Education adopts an integral approach to

the environment, both natural and man-made, and
promotes a holistic, dynamic and interactive view of its
biological, physical, social, economic, technological and
cultural components.

1.1 What is Environmental Science?

Goals of Environmental Education

1. Society prepares its citizens to carry out their
responsibilities through is system of education.
a. Education must develop in each citizen an
awareness of, and a sensitivity to the
environment and its problems.
b. Education must teach each citizen the
knowledge, understanding and skills needed to
solve problems.
c. Education must foster positive attitudes and
patterns of conduct toward the environment.

2. E.E. must consider all aspects of the environment-

natural and man- made, technological, social,
economic, political, cultural, aesthetic and knowledge.

1.1 What is Environmental Science?

Goals of Environmental Education

3. E.E. must emphasize an enduring continuity, linking
actions of today to the consequences for tomorrow and
the need to think globally.
4. E.E. must aid young citizens in developing a sense of
responsibility and commitment to the future, and prepare
them to carry out the role of safeguarding and improving
the environment upon which all life depends.
5. Real E.E. is far different. It teaches students critical
thinking and informs them of environmental science as it
really is an ongoing search for truth.
6. In sum, E.E. is a valuable part of science instruction. It
molds students into smug crusaders whose initial
foundation of knowledge is shaky at best.

1.2 Current Conditions

We live in a marvelous planet

» Beautiful, bountiful planet
» We live in a remarkably prolific and hospitable
world
» Unique in the universe
» Plentiful supplies of clean air, fresh water, and
fertile soil are regenerated endlessly and
spontaneously by geological and biological cycles

We face many serious environmental

problems
1. Clean water
2. Food supplies
3. Energy
4. Climate Change
5. Air Pollution
6. Biodiversity Loss

1.3 Sustainable Development
» The concept of sustainable development was
described by the 1987 Bruntland Commission
Report as “development that meets the needs of
the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.”

» Sustainable development is defined as an

approach to developing or growing by using
resources in a way that allows for them to renew
or continue to exist for others. Using recycled
materials or renewable resources when building is
an example of sustainable development.

1.3.1 Millennium Development Goals
» The eight Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs)
– which range from halving
extreme poverty rates to
halting the spread of
HIV/AIDS and providing
universal primary
education, all by the target
date of 2015 – form a
blueprint agreed to by all the
world's countries and all the
world's leading development
institutions.

1.3.2 Sustainable Development Goals
» The Sustainable
Development Goals are the
blueprint to achieve a better
and more sustainable future
for all.
» They address the global
challenges we face, including
poverty, inequality, climate
change, environmental
degradation, peace and
justice.
