The ‘components unique othe electronic corral ofthe rans- mmission are exlained here. Transmission control module (TCM) The TCM is 2 microprocessor based unit having control over al shit Points and the wansmision ln pressure that determines shit qualiy. Contol inputs are appled othe tensission ‘operating strategy. From the strategy, the TCM controls the shift solenoids, force motor (ine pressure), and the torque corwerter cutch solenoid. ciagnostc facility allows the TCM to diagnose transmission and related ‘component problems. Tis information is accessed via sera communication, NOTE: The TCM looaton varies with vehicle model ype Refer to page 54 Pressure switch manifold The pressure switch mani fold is a multiple switch assembly made up of § ‘ormaly-open pressure switces to prowde a togie input to the TOM, Various fuid pressures are fed from the manual valve tothe switches depending on gear selector ‘and manual vabe postionng. These pressures determine the digta logic atthe connector pins A Band C. Transmission output speed sensor The output speed sensor isa variable reluctance magnetic pick-up. ‘The sensor is mounted inthe case apposite the output speed sensor rng thats pressed onto the output cari ‘assembly. Whenever the vehicle fs moving, the sensor produces an AC voltage input othe TCM proportional to vehicle speed ‘Transmission input speed sensor The input speed sensor i identical tothe output speed sensor except that ituses the machined teeth onthe forward clutch housing asthe rotor. The sensor produces an AC vhage input to the TOM proportional to torque converter turbine speed. Fluid temperature sensor The transmission fuidtem- perature sensor, located inthe pressure switch wiring hhamess, is a temperature sensitive resistor (thermisto) that provides a ud temperature input tothe TOM, Shift solenoids Two shit solenoids ~ A and B — are Used to apply upshis and downshifts in al forward gear ranges. The solencids work together in a combination of (ON and OFF sequences to apply hydraulic pressure tothe ‘various sift valves. wus Range Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid The TCC solenoid is used to control the torque corwerter lock-up dutch apply and release, The solenoid duty ce (percent time energized) is varied by TCM control ofthe ground. Cireuit. The variable duty cycle ofthe solenoid allows the lock-up rate to be varied to ensure smooth operation. Force motor The force motos an eecvonic pressure requltor controled by the TCM to produce a hycrauic “rque signal pressure” thats primary an indication of tote fering. The speed inputs are ‘also used to calculate turbine speed, deviation from gear rao, and lock-up catch sippage for diagnostic purposes ‘and “adaptive earring” functions. ‘Transmission fluid temperature The TCM monitors the transmission fui temperature to help determine torque converter lock-up clutch operation and line pres sue. The TCM inhibits lockup clutch operation und! the ‘uid temperature reaches approximately 68°F (20°C), Iv te fluid temperature becomes excessively high (ap- proximately 20°F [122°C)), the TCM will apply the lock-up clutch whenever the transmission i in Second Third or Fourth gears. Engine throttle position A variable voltage input alows the TOM to sense thrtle postion. Thratle pos tin, and other sensor inputs are used to determine shit pattems and torque converter lock-up clutch apply and release. In general, the greater the throtle opening, the higher the upsit speeds and the greater the transmission line pressure, The TCM releases the lock-up clutch at minimum trotte opening and during open-toe heavy acceleration, Barometric pressure sensor The barometiic pres- sure input allows the TCM to adjust the line pressure for changes in air densty that affect engine power. Engine speed An engine speed inputs supolied tothe TCM rom the ignition ECM, Engine speed is ane ofthe sensed inpus used ta determine shift pattems and torque converter lacicup clutch apply and release, Brake operation The TOM receives a bakes applied inputia the stoplight ray. When the brakes are applied the TOM releases the torque converter lock-up dtc A/G compressor clutch operation The TCM receives a compressor clutch operating input rom the ci ‘ate contro module compressor clutch relay activation Circuit. ALidle (rote closed, current fw is close to ‘maximum, postoning the force motor so that minimum torque signal” pressure is applied to the ine pressure regulator. Atul throttle, cuent fow is cose to minimum, posioning the force motor so that maximum “torque sig- ra” pressure is applied tothe line pressure regulator. Ifthe electrical system becomes disabled, curent flow to the force motor will stop and maximum “torque signal” pressure will be applied creating maximum fne pressure thus preventing component slippage until the candtian can be corrected Gear shift solenoids A and B The TCM controls the shift solenoids, based on parameters defined by the oper ating strategy, by switching the solenoid coil ground Circuits, The folowing table shows the solenoid state ‘camibination required for each gear range: Gear Range Solenoid A_ Solenoid B PRN ON OFF Fist ON oF Second oF oF Thi or oN Fourth oN oN Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid The ate atwhich the torque converter lock-up clutch is anped de- pends on the torque converter clutch signal pressure as controled by the duty cycle ofthe TCC solenoid.
