Engineering Mechanics Final Exam

1. The bucket weighs 15 lbs. determine the forces in the cables.

2. Find the moment of inertia of a disc of mass 3 kg and radius 50 cm about the following axes.

i. axis passing through the center and perpendicular to the plane of the disc,

ii. axis touching the edge and perpendicular to the plane of the disc and

iii. axis passing through the center and lying on the plane of the disc.

3. A canon placed on a carriage fires a 250 kg ball to the horizontal with a speed of 50 m/sm/s. If the mass of
the canon and the carriage is 4000 kg, find the recoil speed of the canon.

4. The motor M begins rotating at ω = 4(1 – e-t) rad/s, where t is in seconds. The radii of the motor, fan pulleys, and fan
blades are 1 in, 4 in, and 16 in, respectively. The magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration at point P on the fan blade
when t = 0.5 s.

i) Determine the angular velocity and acceleration of the motor using kinematics of angular motion.

ii) Assuming the belt does not slip, the angular velocity and acceleration of the fan are related to the motor's values by
the belt.

iii) The magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of point P can be determined from the scalar equations of motion for
a point on a rotating body.
