1. a manufacturer of fluorescent bulbs claims that mean life of fluorescent bulb is 400 hours. a sample of 35
fluorescent bulbs was taken and it showed a mean of 399 hours with a standard deviation of 1.1 hours, is the
mean life different from 400 hours? use the 0.05 significance level.

2. English teacher wants to test whether the mean reading speed of students is 550 words per minute. A sample of
12 students revealed a sample mean of 540 word per minute with a standard deviation of 5 words per minute.
At the 0.05 significance level, is the reading speed from 550 words per minute?

Example 6.51

Bamboo craft shop is engaged in making sofa sets made from indigenous materials and exported to other
countries. Records show that the weekly production of sofa set follows a normal distribution with a mean of 20 and
a standard deviation of 2. The shop owner had undergone series of seminars and after undergoing such seminars,
she introduces new methods and techniques in the procedure of sofa making and increased the number of her
workers. During, the last 52 weeks, she observed a weekly production of 23 sofa sets. At the 0.05 significance level,
can the shop owner conclude that there is a change in the weekly production of sofa set?

Self-test 6.2

In the label, it is written that a light bulb has a mean life of 360 and with a standard deviation of 90 hours. To
test the claim, 60 light bulbs were tested and showed a mean life of 354. At the 0.05 significance level, can we say
that mean life is different from 360?
