ART FORMS OF ORISSA
− The Indian state of Odisha has a rich cultural and artistic
heritage. Due to the reign of many different rulers in the past,
arts and crafts in Odisha underwent many changes giving an
artistic diversity today in
the forms of traditional
handicrafts, painting and
carving, dance and music.

− Major handicrafts in Odisha

include applique work,
brass and bell metal, silver
filigree and stone carving.
Other forms
include Lacquer, Papier
Mache, and tribal combs, handlooms and wood and traditional
stone carving.

− The history of painting in Odisha dated back to ancient times

with rock-shelter paintings, some of which are dated to the early
historic period (300 BC – 100 AD.

containers, fans, candle stands, trays, wall hangings, vegetable
strainers and others.

− While the creation of bamboo products is heavily for local

consumption, there is a steadily growing market outside the
state boundaries, which is broadening the horizon for my craft.
Bamboo products are important in the indigenous economy of a
rural India, and famous worldwide, much to our delight, for their
combination of utility, decorative value and excellent
craftsmanship.

− Cane and bamboo are the two most commonly-used materials in

daily life in Orissa. Products ranging from household
implements to construction of dwelling houses to weaving
accessories to musical instruments are made in bamboo. No
mechanical devices are used in the craft, which is mainly a
household industry.

ADVANTAGES OF USE OF BAMBOO

o These eco-friendly products are light in weight and have their
own style and elegance.
o These products have a high life with minimum maintenance and
are at par with wood, if not better.
o Strips of bamboo and various types of canes are extensively used
to manufacture different utility and decorative items
o Cane and bamboo can also be converted into strong and unique
furniture, which are very popular now. Jewelry, bags and
handbags are the other popular items of this craft.

The Steps involved in making of the bamboo crafts of Orissa are as
