Improvising Accompaniment to
Southeast Asian Music

I. INTRODUCTION
Hello, I am glad that you were able to accomplish the previous module. This
will be your last module for this quarter. So, I suppose you will give your best shot.
Let us start!

II. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to improvise simple
accompaniment to selected Southeast Asian music.

III. VOCABULARY LIST


Form - the structure of a musical composition
Texture - is the way the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic materials are combined in
a composition thus determining the overall quality of the sound in a piece.
Timbre - tone color or tone quality which refers to the quality of a musical note or
sound or tone that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices
and musical instruments, string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion
instruments. It also refers to the physical characteristics of sound that determine the
perception of timbre include spectrum and envelope.

IV. PRE-TEST
DIRECTION: Based from the songs that you have listened to in the previous
modules, describe the musical elements of Southeast Asian Music. Use the table
below and write your answers on a sheet of paper.

PRACTICE TASK 1: SING IT! MOVE IT


DIRECTION: Research one Southeast Asian song and be familiarized with it. Sing it
and enhance your performance using improvised musical instruments as
accompaniments. Take a video of your performance and send it to your teacher
through e-mail or social messaging. Please refer to the criteria given below. Before
performing, briefly explain your answers to the following questions:
 Describe how a musical element reflects the culture of each country;
 What is the difference between the traditional and contemporary folk songs of
Southeast Asia?

PRACTICE TASK 2: MUSICAL COMPOSITION/ PERFORMANCE

DIRECTION: Choose a folk song from the country which you like most – Cambodia,
Indonesia or Malaysia. Use improvised musical instruments appropriate as
accompaniment. You are expected to compose your own accompaniment for this
activity.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
Any improvised musical instrument that is similar to the sound of the instruments of
Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia
Sheets of paper
Pens

PRACTICE TASK 3: BRING THE BEAT IN!

DIRECTIONS: Look for available materials such as plastic bottles, bamboo


sticks, spoon/fork and an empty soda can. Using the materials, present a rhythmic
accompaniment for any Traditional Southeast Asian song. Take a video of your
performance and send it to your teacher through e-mail or social messaging. Below
are the suggested patterns for accompaniment.

VII. POST TEST


DIRECTION: Using the Venn diagram, compare and contrast the music of Southeast
Asian Countries particularly Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia with the Philippine
Traditional Music.
