Waves and Waves Properties

Mechanical and Electromagnetic
Waves

INTRODUCTION

Waves are seen almost everywhere and in all sizes. We see them in the ocean carrying a
current, and we see them carrying our cell phone and wi-fi signals. Waves are often identified by
a repetitive up and down function, whether it is in energetics or actual particles. This form of
motion is referred to as oscillatory motion. There are many types of waves and although they all
have things in common there are also behaviours and characteristics that can distinguish them
from each other. For example, we could look at the direction of travel of the wave in relation to
the movement of the particles of the medium they are travelling through which allow us to
categorise waves into 3 categories such as transverse waves, longitudinal waves and surface
waves. Or we could look at the waves ability or inability to transmit energy through a vacuum.
This leads us to 2 notable categories of waves, mechanical and electromagnetic. Mechanical
waves can be classed as elastic waves because their transmission depends on the medium’s elastic
properties.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this module, you should have been able to:
 Discuss the types and properties of waves;
 Explain the processes that result in the production and energy transfer of
electromagnetic waves;
 Determine the behaviour of waves in various media in terms of reflection, refraction
and diffraction of waves;
 Explain the relationship between the phenomena of interference and the principle of
superposition;
 Demonstrate the transfer of energy through different mediums by mechanical waves;
 Differentiate between mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves and give examples.
 Create a graphic organizer of any type about the lesson.

Processes involve in the propagation

of energy transfer of electromagnetic
waves

INTRODUCTION

Electromagnetic waves are light waves, but they don't just include the visible
light we can see. Light waves come in all forms depending on how spread out the
wave peaks are. Radio waves are used to propagate signals on AM radio. Microwaves
are used to heat our food, and to propagate the waves we need for cell phone service.
On the other side of the spectrum, X-rays are used in medicine, and energy intensive
gamma rays are used to sterilize our food. Electromagnetic waves propagate energy
forward, but do not use a medium.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 Describe process of energy and mass transfer during wave motion.

 Explain the process involve in the propagation of energy in the following:
a. AM Radio c. x-rays e. infra-red
b. Microwaves d. TV waves f. alpha particles
 Explore the best scan or diagnosis procedure for a particular disease. CT

Phenomena of Interference and

the Principle of Superposition

INTRODUCTION

Interference is a phenomenon in which two waves superimpose to form a

resultant wave of greater or lesser amplitude. Its effects can be observed in all types of
waves. Interference usually refers to the interaction of waves that are correlated with
each other because they originate from the same source, or they have the same or
nearly the same frequency. When two or more waves arrive at the same point, they
superimpose themselves on one another. More specifically, the disturbances of waves
are superimposed when they come together—a phenomenon called superposition.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module you should be able to:

 Differentiate between interference and superposition.
 Distinguish between constructive from destructive interference.
 Apply the properties of waves and the principle of superposition to explain wave
interference.
 Examine the conditions necessary to produce a standing wave.
 Discuss five applications of superposition principle.

MOTIVATION: OPEN THE SURPRISE

Even on the soapy film you can see the patterns and colors change. Then
as the bubbles float in the air, we can see colors swirling and swimming
across the almost perfectly spherical surface. There are still questions that
clings into our mind like, Why do we see these colors and why do they change? How in
the world could such ugly stuff as motor oil be so colorful when spilled on water? How do
this phenomenon similar to that of bubbles and oil slicks. Answers to these questions will
begin to unfold when we study the interference and principle of superposition. Are you
ready? If you are ready you may continue exploring our module, if not, Let me remind you
that “Kaya mo, Kaya mo pa, at kakayanin mo.” Study this module and get that degree!

TESTING NEURONS

Answer the following questions substantially.

1. What is the concept of superposition and how does it relate to interference?
2. How are constructive and destructive interference similar?
3. How does the principle of superposition apply to the phenomenon of interference?
4. How is a standing wave formed? Can standing waves be created in air?
