Assignment - 1

Data Communication & Networking [EC 3028]

Full Marks: 20
Date of Submission: 16th August 2020

Q.1] What is the classification of Transmission Media? What are the transmission impairments? Write
one point on each. In a channel if the Signal power is 100mW and Noise power is 0.01uW, find out
SNR in dB. [2]

Q.2] What are the different Topologies? Draw each topology. In Mesh topology if Number of nodes=7,
Calculate the number of links. [1]

Q.3] What is line coding? A given binary data sequence is 1011101101. Draw the following
i. Manchester code [1]
ii. Differential Manchester code

Q.4] What is MODEM? Draw the block diagram showing suitable lables on working of MODEM. [1]

Q.5] Draw the OSI Model. Write the responsinilities of Physical layer and Datalink Layer. [2.5]

Q.6] Discuss about Parallel Transmission, Asynchronous transmission and Synchronous

transmission.[2.5]

Q.7] Suggest the type of data to signal conversion scheme with Block diagram required for
(I) WiredNetwork (ii) Wireless Network. Provided the user data is 101011101. [2.5]
Hint: Wired Network => Digital Transmission and Wireless Network => Analog Transmission

Q.8] From the prospective of Data Communication, Users wants to send File, Image, Video and
Audioas Payload. Explain the Process using OSI layer architecture, how the user data (Payload) will
be processed and Transmitted from Sender side (Encapsulation) and how it will be received at the
receiver side (De-capsulation). Explain with suitable diagram. [2.5]

Q.9] 4 input lines of 100kbps are multiplexed using Synchronous TDM. If 100 bits at a time is
multiplexed, find out the following and show in the TDM diagram [2.5]
a) Input time slot
b) Output link data-rate
c) Output time slot
d) Output Frame duration
e) Output Frame rate

Q.10] Why Stastical TDM is preferred over Synchronous TDM? [2.5]

Eight 14400bps lines are to be multiplexed using TDM. Each input lines are busy for 66%ofthe time.
If we wish to limit the aversge link utilization to 0.9, find out:
i. Capacity required for statistical TDM
ii. Load in the Multiplexer
iii. Saving with respect to synchronous TDM

DC&N ASSIGNMENT 2

Submission Date: 21st Nov. 2020

Question No. Question

1 Draw and explain about each field of IEEE 802.3 frame format.

2 Discuss about PCF and DCF ( with required diagram) in computer network.

3 What is Spanning Tree Algorithm (STA)? Avoid looping and find out (i) Root port (ii) Path Cost
(iii) Root Path Cost (iv) Designated Bridge to each LAN (v) Designated Port to each LAN in the
following diagram.

4 Accenture, a leading IT service provider has hired you as their Network Engineer to design their
corporate network. The company has got a pool of IP address as 172.2.0.0, which they have to
divide into 7 subnets for each of their branches. They have a requirement of up to 8189 hosts in each
of their branch offices situated at Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Bangaluru, Hydrabad, Pune, Kolkata and
Chennai. Design the subnets for given locations and findout the NETWORK ADDRESS,
BROADCAST ADDRESS and POOL OF IP ADDRESSES for each locations. Do not use
172.2.0.0 as NETWORK ADDRESS in any of the subnets.

5 Explain DNS.

6 IPv4 packet carrying 4200 bytes of data with Identification no. 16,760 has to be Fragmented, since it
has to be encapsulated in a link layer PDU having MTU of 1620 bytes. Only the second Fragment is
further fragmented into two equal size. Draw the IPv4 header diagram for all fragments and put the
values in suitable fields by calculating the values of Total length, identification, Flag and
Fragmentation offset. Draw proper diagram for all IPv4 packets as required.
7 Draw suitable diagram and explain Network Address Translation (NAT) for a given NAT Router R1
is having Public IP 16.89.10.10. Private Network 190.160.1.0/24 (1st IP address in the Gateway). A
host in private network having IP Address 190.160.1.37 want to access the content of a Server
www.google.com having IP Address 56.40.26.17. Show the exchange of IPv4 packets through
NAT Router with required fields.

8 Write the mathematical expressions for Dijikstra's Algorithm. Using Dijkstra's algorithm, find
the shortest cost and path from the source node A to every other node in the given network.

9 Why transition from IPV4 to IPV6 is necessary? Briefly explain the three transition
strategies.

10 Calculate Checksum for the given IPv4 datagram.

11 Write the mathematical expressions for Bellman Ford Algorithm. Using Bellman Ford
algorithm, find the shortest cost and path from the source node 1 to every other node
in the given network.
12 What are the applications of Transport layer.

13 What is Congestion? Explain with example, how Congestion is controlled in TCP?

14 Define QoS. Discuss about the concept of Leaky Bucket traffic shaping mechanism.

15 Differentiate Integrated service from Differentiated service in QoS.
