Study case report #3

#1 Introduction
Unit 3 is about Components and assemblies.
• Describing component shapes and features: Describe the component shapes
using words like rectangular, triangular, cylindrical, etc.
• Explaining and assessing manufacturing techniques: Explain how to manufacture
a product using words like drilling, milling, sawing, etc.
• Explaining jointing and fixing techniques: Using words like screw, weld, rivet, etc.
explain jointing techniques
• Describing position of assembled components: Describe the position using words
like above, over, outside, around, etc.

#2 Objectives
Use the vocabulary learned during the unit to describe the operation and what the cable
tie can be used for.

#3
Part 1
1. What do you think it is?
It is a piece of plastic.
2. What is it used for?
It is used to put two things together.
Part 2
“We are pleased to present this new product which has incalculable potency. First, we
would like to talk about the possible applications of the product.”
“The ties can be used for outdoor applications like pitch a tent, fasten cables that are in
the open, fix tarps, also the ties can be used on indoor applications, temporarily close a
compartment, join cables.”
“Now you wonder how this cable works, well, cable tie consists of a flexible nylon tape
with an integrated gear rack, and on one end a ratchet within a small open case. Once
the pointed tip of the cable tie has been pulled through the case and past the ratchet, it
is prevented from being pulled back[1].”
“The advantages of our product are easy operation, good insulation, self-locking, anti-
corrosion and durability. Traditionally, a little time was required to tie with rope. But now
with the help of nylon cable ties, the tying up process takes only a few seconds. Hence,
the nylon cable ties effectively improve work efficiency and saves time[2].”
Part 3
The material with which the cable tie is made may be too hard this could cause that if a
cable is tightened too hard it could be damaged, due to the design of the cable tie it is
very difficult to remove so if it is necessary to move something that is tied it is difficult to
remove it, tighter bundles can increase the build-up of heat between conductors.
Because of such, some electrical code will not allow this type of bundling to take effect
as it presents a potential fire hazard if the cables overheat too much. And zip ties should
never be used with higher voltage wire without appropriate derating of the wire.[3]
Part 4
This product is made to reduce the contamination generated by the cable tie, a rapstrap
can be used up to 5 times, this thanks to the fact that none of the product is wasted this
thanks to the unique design patented by me. The customers who prefer this product is
because it is not as rigid as cable ties, which makes it perfect for agriculture or to avoid
damaging components that must be together but are delicate like cables.

#4 Conclusion
With this case study, practice how to describe a product, how it works, how to compare
it with another on the market and how it is made. In my career it can be useful when
explaining how a piece that I design is made and why it is made that way.
