Study case report #2

#1 Introduction
Unit 2 is about materials technology, describe and specify material and properties.
• Describing specific materials: We learned how to describe materials and
properties.
• Categorizing materials: The different types of classification of materials like exotic,
ferrous, ceramics, etc. and how to say what a thing is made of.
• Specifying and describing properties: How to describe a property of a material
using words like toughness, lightweight, etc.
• Discussing quality issues: Describe the advantages and disadvantages of
materials in a product.
2# Objectives
• Describe how a material is, how can we use a material, qualities, advantages.
• Practice the vocabulary learned during the unit 2.
3#
Part 1
1. What are the main applications of reinforced concrete?
The reinforced Is used for construction on a large scale, such as bridges, dams,
piers, tall buildings and stadiums.

2. What specific materials does it consist of?

the component materials are almost always concrete and steel. The steel is the
reinforcement, but you can use other materials as the reinforcement like glass fibre
or polypropylene.

3. What different categories of material do reinforced concrete and the materials it is

made of belong to?
The concrete belongs to compounds materials. This means that it is made up of
different constituent materials with very different properties that complement each
other.
The reinforcement of the concrete belongs to metallic materials.
4. What are some of the properties of reinforced concrete?
Concrete is strong in compression. Steel is strong in tension and compression, but
in compression a steel bar that is thin enough to be economic will buckle.
Reinforced concrete structure therefore uses steel in tension, and concrete in
compression.

Part 2
• Why is reinforced concrete especially attractive as a way of using recycled
materials? What might the three key reasons mentioned in the article be?
Reinforced concrete is one of the most used materials in construction, since
concrete is made of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and reinforcement, many
recycled materials such as rubble can be used.
Concrete is made up of various things so the added recycled materials are not
visible, in addition the reinforcement can be made of different materials, so it is not
visible either.

• What technical requirements would reinforcing materials, such as aggregates,

need to have?
Concrete is used in large structures because it supports high loads and is very
resistant, materials must be able to carry the required loads, the materials should
not cause the reinforcement to rust because what is built with this material must
last for decades, withstanding the environment, in addition, the concrete must be
easy to handle before it hardens so that it is easy to work with.
Part 3
Coarse aggregates:
Aggregates are commonly obtained by crushing the naturally occurring rocks. The
properties of the rocks are mainly depended upon the type of rock.

• Broken bricks or blast furnace slag

• Air-cooled slag
• Rocks
• Stone
• Sand
• Gravel
Fine aggregates:
Fine aggregate fills voids between aggregates. It forms the bulk and makes mortar or
concrete economical.

• Pit Sand
• River Sand
• Sea Sand
• Silty Sand
• Clayey Sand

Reinforced fibers:
Fiber Reinforced Concrete is a composite material consisting of fibrous material which
increases its structural integrity.

• Polypropylene fiber
• Glass fiber reinforced
• Polyester fibers
• Carbon fibers
• Macro synthetic fibers
• Micro-synthetic
• Natural fiber
• Cellulose fibers

#4 Conclusion
With this case study, I practice describing specific materials, how to use, what
properties they have, as well as what a material in concrete can help make it better in
one aspect or worse than another. In my career I can use this to describe what material
would be best for a piece that I am designing and why use that material.
