Eco 101 Presentation

Assalamu alaikum. My name is Faiyaz Ahmed. My code number is 2019-3-10-215.

I’m from section 3. Our presentation topic is effect of onion export ban by India
and my part on this presentation is why India banned onion export?
In September last year, India imposed a ban on onion exports. India banned the
export of onions after excessive rainfall damaged crops and reduced harvest. The
ban took effect on Sunday and will last “till further orders,” according to a
government notice.
The government has to take this decision to ease conflict of interests among local
farmers, consumers, and importers. The lifting of export ban will help farmers get
better prices for their rabi onions, which are expected to arrive in the market in
huge quantities this month. Since the price of onion has stabilized and there is
bumper onion crop, government has decided to lift ban on export of onions. The
government resorted to the ban last year as the retail prices spiked due to the
poor kharif crop on account of heavy rains and floods in onion-growing areas.

However, Experts said the sudden import of onions would make the price slump,
which may hit the cultivators hard. Onion farmers will lose their interests in
growing the crop in the coming years if they face losses. Farmers now fear losses
as India lifted its ban on export of the essential cooking ingredient at a time when
the growers have start harvesting the crop.
The ban on onion exports, which created a supply shortage in markets and
prompted traders to increase the price to Tk250 per kg.
The prices went as high as an unprecedented Tk 250 per kg in the market.
The price increased when on Sept 13, India doubled the export price to $850 per
ton.
Later, it stopped exporting onion altogether in a move that destabilised the local
market.
Onion prices began to drop in the second week of December when it was
imported from different countries. The price ranged from Tk 70 to 100 by the end
of the year.
Meanwhile, the government had earlier assured that it would not allow the
import of onions during the harvesting period, February to May.
But The government has amended the export policy for onions to allow their
export from March 15 in the interest of farmers. This decision will increase the
income of farmers.
