1. Differentiate between job specification and job description. (15mks)

i. Job description is a concise written statement, explaining about what are the

major requirements for a particular job while Job specification explains the

minimum eligibility requirements for performing a particular job.

ii. Job description lists out job title, duties, tasks and responsibilities involved in a

job while job specification lists out employee’s qualifications, skills and abilities.

iii. Job description expresses what a prospective employee must do when he will get

the placement while job specification expresses what an applicant must possess

for getting selected.

iv. Job description is prepared from job analysis while job specification is prepared

from job description.

v. Job description describes jobs while job specification describes job holders.

vi. Job description comprises of designation, place of work, scope, salary range,

working hours, responsibilities as well as reporting authority while job

specification comprises of educational qualifications, experience, skills,

knowledge, age, abilities and work orientation factors.


2. Explain Business Process Re-engineering. (15mks)

Business process re-engineering is a business management strategy focusing on the analysis and

design of work-flows and business processes within an organization.

In an organization, business process re-engineering is used formulate how work is done so as to

improve customer service, cut operational expenses and become high competitors in the market.

It also seeks to help companies re-structure the organization by focusing on the ground

application design of their business processes.

Re-engineering emphasizes on an all-inclusive focus on business objectives and the persons

related to them from encouraging full-scale recreation of processes rather than iterative

optimization of business processes.

In the re-engineering, other words to be used are like re-design, transformation or process change

management.
B.P.R is the practice of re-thinking and re-designing the way work is done to better support an

organization’s mission and reduce costs.

In businesses organizational re-engineering has two areas;

 Use of modern technology to enhance data dissemination and decision making process.

 Alter functional organizations to form functional teams.

The process of re-engineering has some quite functional steps to consider.

Re-engineering starts with high level assessment of the organizational mission, strategic goals

and customer needs.

Here, basic questions are asked such as;-Does the mission need to be redefined?

- Are the strategies and goals aligned with the mission?

- Who are the customers?

An organization may find that it is operating on questionable assumptions particularly in terms of

the wants and needs of customers.

After re-thinking of what to do, the organization then decides on how best to do it.

This framework considers mission and goals in which re-engineering tries to help the

organization focus on the business processes, steps and procedures that govern how resources are

used to create products and services that meet needs of particular customers or markets.
